9 Weeks 3 Days (post op)
Last Monday December 13 was my 4th physio visit. I am now exclusively in two shoes and taking extra care when in crowded places or on snow or ice. At physio i was given new exercises. I am now doing two leg calf raises for strength and single leg standing for balance. The single leg standing came easily and i am able to do the initial goal of 30secs at a time with no pain. I was very cautious when i first attempted the two leg calf raises. At present i am doing 3 sets of 10 reps every day. I confess i am favouring the uninjured leg but trying to stop that and even the weight out. When i can easily do 3 sets of 20 reps my physio wants me to start the single eccentric calf raise but that seems a while off yet. At that time i am also to start standing on the wobble board to improve balance. Nowadays I am noticing more stiffness and slight swelling in my ankle but i am sure it is down to the increased use of the injured leg with the walking and exercises. I am fortunately not experiencing any pain.
Hope everyone is recovering well and i wish you all a happy holidays. Paul

I too had the increase swelling initially but that decreases slowly. I think that’s the nature of the injury, each increase in activity brings a little swelling. My resoning is - if it’s back to normal after a night’s sleep I’m ok with it. It sounds we’re at very similar points in our recovery, keep up the healing and have a great Christmas and new year. LL
Great stuff Paul,
I am 9weeks 5days post op. 8 of which were in a cast.
I hear you on the 2 leg calf raises. I def am favouring the strong leg. But bit by bit I’m putting a bit more weight into the injuried one. They are tough.
having read your post I think we are also in a similar position. Great to be back walking all be it a slow walk. Can just about walk down the stairs normally now. The swelling in the ankle area is also improving, but after a lot of excercise I know about it.
Keep us posted on the wobble board and the single cast raise. Both will be landmark days in your recovery.
Be carefull with those two

Hi PaulG, Sounds like your doing well. Don’t worry about the weight distribution. You will naturally begin to shift your weight more to the ATR leg as you feel stronger and more confident. The main thing is to do the leg raises with proper form and full extension. I think it’s best to do them barefoot so you’re truly raising and extending rather than rolling up to the sole of your shoe. It’s a completely different feeling and, I think, much more effective. All the best and keep healilng.
Thanks for the encouragement LL, Peadar and jla2010. The calf raises are going ok. A little more weight on the recovering leg each day. Slowly does it. Also i find the ankle is getting quite stiff at times, during day and first thing in the morning. I think it is because of the increased walking and then ironically lack of use during the night while sleeping.
