Questions on circulation (Blue Toes)

I am on my 6th week wearing a cast. This Thursday it come off and I move to a boot.
I would have expected once my foot was brought back to 90deg (normal state) in cast my circulation would have gotten better.
I still get blue toes after standing or putting my leg down while sitting, after a short period of time.

Will this go away after I move to the boot?
Or is this something that will progressively get better as I start weight bearing and exercising (PT)?

    Jim,

I’d certainly call the doctor and ask about the blue toes. Probably swelling is causing the blue toes. Are you taking any anti-inflamatories? I always did as much moving my toes around in the cast as possible and trying to tighten the calf muscle as well. I think any movement helps improve the blood flow. when you get your boot I’d certainly do as much ROM and light self massage on the ankle, scar and tendon.

Day by Day, Step by Step

I experienced the same thing after my cast was removed. When I called the doctor’s office to ask if I should be conerned, his assistant told me no if it only lasted for a day or two and to call if it persisted. Once I started walking in the boot, the discoloration was gone w/in a day. However, if it continues, check with your doctor.

Agreed with what other posters said. Also, if you experience any leg pain, go see the doc. I developed a recurrence of my swelling after about 5 weeks post-op, accompanied by leg pain, and it turned out I had a blood clot in my leg.

Err on the side of caution with this.
