I’m now afraid of the Wii!!

March 28th, 2009

So, there I was doing as I was told by the asthma nurse and getting regular exercise, joined a gym, walked a lot more and then my husband decided a Wii fit was a good idea. That was spring 2008. Shrove Tuesday 2009, and I’m doing my daily Wii fit exercise in the front room, with Matt sitting with a cuppa in the background and suddenly there is a loud pop followed by the sensation of being hit on the back of the leg. I actually turned around thinking I’d bumped into the coffee table and knocked something off it. It wasn’t until Matt said that I was nowhere near the table that I thought to put my right foot back on the floor (I wasn’t even standing on it when it went!) it was not a good idea, my foot was floppy, and although it took some weight, I couldn’t walk properly at all. OOPS!

An hour later and we leave A&E with me diagnosed as having a complete rupture of my achilles tendon and my right leg in a temporary plaster cast with an appointment at the fracture clinic for the next day. I hastily rearrange my day (I’m a Church of England Minister working in a team of 5) and my colleagues all have a good laugh at my expense that afternoon at our team meeting.

Next day, I go to the fracture clinic and get told that it will be at least 3 months before I’ll be anything like normal and it slowly begins to dawn on me that this is no simple injury. The consultant is really lovely and we talk through the treatment options, surgery, while having some very clear benefits would be complicated by the fact that I am asthmatic and to be honest I’m no fan of surgery, so we go for conservative management and I hobble out on crutches after being put into a thigh length cast in the equinus position. I get an appointment for 2 weeks hence and am told to keep it elevated and non weight bearing.

So begins my achilles tendon recovery… and a real fear of the Wii fit!!
