Bruising around achilles at 5 months WTF?

I am at 5 and half months since surgery and to date my recovery has gone great. I am pretty much back to normal running and training. I also have fairly good strength as I can do about 15 unassisted single leg heel raises. I noticed a couple of days ago some discoloration on the back of my achilles like it was bruised. Now it is all along the inside of my ankle and still on back of achilles. Anyone have any insight as to what this might be or what could have caused it? I have not done anything out of the ordinary as far as workouts and I have overstretched or rolled my ankle in any way. I do crossfit which is pretty extreme workouts and am a little nervous to go right now. Any thoughts?

  1. Bruising is internal bleeding. Something is torn/ripped/ruptured in there. If it’s not hurting you, my guess would be that - with all your training - you just tore up a little scar tissue. So long as it doesn’t get worse, doesn’t cause a swelling response, and starts to fade, I probably wouldn’t worry about it too much. It might actually be a sign of progress.

Is the new bruising (on the inside) below the old bruising (on the back)? If so, it may be the same “bruise”- gravity drawing the blood down and in to where it’s visible on the inside. Keep in mind that “below” could also be relative to how you slept on it.

  2. Ya, that gravity effect on bruises — the discoloration, the inflammation, and even the discomfort and stiffness! — is huge. ~6 months after “this” (my 2nd) ATR, I banged the shin on my OTHER leg. After the bruising sank down my leg to my ankle and foot, it felt ~100% like my post-ATR ankle had felt! If I hadn’t been there, I would have trouble believing it!

  3. Yea that would make sense maybe tearing some scar tissue. I never did have any pain or swelling from it. The bruising has subsided now so it ended up being no big deal. Had me a little worried tho when I first noticed it.
