Week 18

Saw the surgeon today, it’s now four months since my surgery.  He’s very pleased with progress, as am I, and he’s given me the green light to start jogging/running again, which is exciting news!  He expects to see me once more, in another two months, and that should be it.  And skiing again by the time the snow starts falling this winter.

Hard to believe it’s now four months on, and the incredibly frustrating times of being in a cast and then the boot do seem a long time ago.

Have been out on my mountain bike a lot and that’s feels great.  Leg feels good and calf muscle is slowly returning, a little stiffness in the mornings, and some soreness if I walk more than a couple of miles.

Single leg heel raises are coming on nicely, although I really have to focus to get the full extension.

Interestingly, the surgeon explained that’s he’s changing his recovery protocol shortly for those who take the operative route, and they’ll go straight into a boot post surgery rather than the two weeks in a cast, followed by the boot, which I had - all to do with the benefits of early weight bearing in a controlled manner.  Did say it’s a shame he didn’t make that decision about six months ago as the period NWB in the cast were very frustrating!

Week 15

Not much to report.  Have been keeping up with the exercises as advised by my physio and slowly but surely the push off in my left leg is returning. Walking is starting to become enjoyable again.  Swelling seems to have disappeared, hopefully for good.

Will see the physio again in a couple of weeks and then at the end of the month I have another follow up appointment with my surgeon.

Week 14

So I’m back from holiday in Miami, and another physio appointment this morning.

She is very pleased with range of movement in the ankle but feels I’m not walking correctly and need to focus on that.  My left leg isn’t pushing off sufficiently when I walk at a faster speed, so there’s something for me to work on over the coming weeks.

Overall I’m pleased with progress and where I’m at but a reminder that there’s still some way to go.

Enjoying being back on my mountain bike especially.

Week 12, actually it’s week 13

Well it’s holiday time, and I’m in Miami to meet the other half who’s been here for work.  Flight from London was ok, compression sock kept swelling to a reasonable level.

Have been out cycling each day which feels really good and can feel the strength returning to my leg.

The pain I’ve had down the outside of my foot has reduced but is definitely still there, hopefully the physio was right and it’s just a case of building the strength back up.

Hard to believe it’s now three months since I’ve ruptured by Achilles.  It’s certainly been a slow and frustrating journey at times, but has also taught me to be more patient about life and not take so many things for granted.

Week 10

So two weeks in normal shoes and it feels good!  The physio is more interesting and enjoyable.  Good range of moment in the ankle and the strength is definitely coming back.

Do have some pain down the outside of my left foot when walking at the foot flexes, my physio isn’t too concerned, believes I simply need to build up the strength in the foot again.

Overall, I’m pleased with the progress, no pain from the achilles, just feels a little tight at times and I’m looking forward to building up the strength in the left leg.  Off on holiday for a week soon, so great to be walking (almost) normally.
