Achillies Swells Up - anyone had somehting like this?
December 20, 2009
I am 6.5 weeks post op today. 10 days ago I started PT - minly ROM excersises. This morning I noticed a small bump about 2 in from my heel. It did not look like much so I did not think much of it. The I went holiday shopping with my husband. All I really did was to keep my foot on the ground for about 3 hours. By then my ankle started to ache. When I got home I saw that my Achillies was swallen an hard to touch. I am not sure if this is something that I should have expected.

I had the exact same thing and I was told it was normal and I should ice and elevate when it happens. The swelling and ‘hardness’ usually go away inside of 20 minutes or so when I do that.

Thanks Deanne, you make me feel better
I did elevate. It has gotten better but has not gone away completely. Let me try the ice now.

You’ll have to deal with the swelling for some time although it gets better as time goes on. What seemed to help me was that I put a ace bandage around my ankle in the evening. That little bit of compression helped bring down any swelling that was there from the day.

I bought a couple pair of knee high compression socks. I wear one every night when I go to bed and it makes a big difference in the swelling. I also have two pair of knee high compression ski socks and wear them for skiing or whenever I will be on my feet for an extended period of time.

the swelling will be there for a while. I think my ankle swelled more noticeably on the inside of my ankle for maybe 6 months post op. I am almost a year post op and i still will elevate and ice after i play sports or workout.

My PT said I could expect swelling up to six months post surgery. As soon as I started PT, the swelling went up because I was doing more. I’m at three months now and still experience some swelling but it’s not nearly as bad as it was a month and a half ago. Ice is your friend.
