11 days post surgery 6 days with a cast
Uncategorized July 6th, 2013Last night was the first since surgery I felt I really slept well, no pain pills and not getting up in the middle of the night with some sort of pain. It’s also not swelling up as much when my leg is not elevated, so I feel like I can do more and not be so dependent on other people.
I have been doing some upper body workouts with weights, some core work and stretching everyday and helps to get the blood flowing, they are not hard workouts but something is betting than nothing. Furthermore, I am taking one trip a day from the house just to get out, Independence day was fireworks, yesterday out to lunch today the grocery store. Finally, I am able to take a shower everyday now using the cast cover and shower stool.
I can’t wait to be able to get out of a chair and step with my left leg. The one bad thing is I was injured at the beginning of summer it seems like I am counting down to the end of summer…when I’ll be able to walk again…and since I am teacher when I go to work again the first day of school is 10 weeks from surgery probably FWB by then!
The Vaco arrived yesterday looks really cool, I get the cast off Wednesday so I am looking forward to the sweet looking boot! Going to buy an extra liner and even up shoe as well. Thanks to everyone on this site and their posts they are great to read.

Hi smoke. Progress is progress even if it is slow. Like you I try to get out when possible. I wear a calf length sock under the boot and change it a few time a day ( like today when it is 90). Normally, I do not wear shoe inmy house, but with a boot on you may need to for balance. I am glad the pain is better.

You especially should fight for (= educate about) a fast modern proven protocol like bit.ly/UWOProtocol or even newer and faster — not just for your own sake and the sake of the next ~100 ATR patients who see your Doc, but also for your school and students. The new rehabs we just discussed on suddsy’s blog — from Vaco and a UK hospital, one with a big stat study — will get you to FWB or close (i.e. FWB “as tolerated”) at TWO WEEKS post-op, and in shoes even faster than UWO’s 8 weeks. Should leave some time for summer hikes or beach-walking before school starts, with better and safer results (= lower rerupture rates) than all the slower protocols. Medical practice is still varied and fuzzy; the evidence is crystal-clear.
