Get a cast, buy a Vaco?
Uncategorized July 1st, 2013This morning after 6 days I got the splint off and the cast put on, I went to bed without a pain pill which may have been a mistake I didn’t sleep too well but the Percoset messes with my mind.
The doctor said everything looked good and put on a hard cast for 9 days with no weight bearing. I asked about the Vaco boot, he said he never heard of it but would write a Rx for it, if I wanted to order it. Vaco said the office needs to make an account to order and the doctor’s office said they just fax Rx’s and do not make accounts. Insurance said they would pay with a letter of explanation since I got a boot from the ER last week.
If the insurance co, doctor office and Vaco can’t communicate I may buy the Vaco boot on my own because swimming would be one thing to look forward to this summer is it worth it?

Yes, I’m curious about the different boot options too. I’m still awaiting suture removal and my cast the day after tomorrow, but I’m learning that you have to be pro-active with these people. No one has told me yet exactly what the rest of this office’s recovery protocol is! I’m going to start a thread with this as a question and see if all of us pre-boot folks can get some good advice.

I am in a Vacoped and it is very good. There are no need for wedges etc. Boot has a function as to what level it is set on. When NWB the Orthotcs dept locked it with foot facing down.
At week 5 (beginning) i became FWB and it was moved to 15 degrees with flex for boot to move.
Week 6 - FWB at 90 degrees to allow it to flex.
Will now be moving to +10 degrees tomorrow for a week and then in shoes (yay!)
Boot is easy to take off with straps - i have been given an extra liner to wash and change so i can change every couple of days which very much helps with hygene etc.
Boot has a pump liner inside it with balls to allow it to be pumped when on to take all the air out so that it locks everything in place.
Would definitely recommend Vacoped.
Good luck.
