Week 4 done - question - how long did you do therapy?

Week 4 completed, not much happening, I’m in the ‘hurry up and wait’ segment of my recovery. 4 more weeks until I go back to the Ortho. At 8 weeks post-op I hope we will be discussing PWB. My really ugly incisions are turning out to look quite good, except for my lower heel, it just does not want to close :( After the stiches were removed last week, the PA put steri-strips on, spaced apart, and told us to change them every day for 2 weeks, alternating the position, so each day we were removing a steri-strip, along with freshly formed scab and opening the wound again. As this seemed very counterproductive, I called the dr’s office and was told “oh you don’t have to keep using them if it’s doing that” HuH?? I am considering putting a couple on my lower heel and just leaving them for the 7-10 days it takes them to fall off by themselves.
So, I’m curious…to anyone reading this who has had physical therapy, I know most of you experienced a ruptured AT, I don’t fall in that category but I’m just wondering what the average physical therapy duration was for you, I understand everyone is different, I don’t need to be told that, how many weeks of therapy did you have? And how many days per week?

  1. First, if your AT was surgically removed from your heel bone and reattached, your rehab should probably be comparable to a post-op ATR. Some would probably say slower still, and I’ve never seen any published study of it, so there may be no good evidence.
    Second, my rehab started very early (2 wks post-non-op, ATR #2) and went 1/wk for at least a month - my blog probably knows! They transferred me from a “normal” PT to a gym/agility/exercise PT, and I quit after 1 session.
    Back in 2001-2, ATR #1, post-op, I went much slower, PT much later, never got to that agility ladder stuff, lasted a long time. And caused a 1-MONTH painful setback, too, as outlined on my blog (& elsewhere).

  2. I am only 3 weeks post op and still in a cast so can’t comment on the PT part. However, I had my stitches removed 8 days post-op and had steri-strips placed over my wound before casting my leg so I haven’t had mine changed since my cast was put on two weeks ago.

  3. Your question is a bit difficult to answer as we are comparing apples with oranges. How many PT visits can often be determined by how much you or your insurance can afford. PT can range from once to twice a week and even more if you can afford it. The further you get into your treatment the less you seem to attend the PT clinic as you can do more on your own. As you did not have a rupture things could be different for your rehab and you may not need as much. An avulsion is where the tendon tears from the bone and again the healing and rehab are different but could be more similiar to your situation. Early loading of an avulsed tendon is significantly counterproductive to healing as opposed to a normal rupture. This may be why you will not be weight bearing for another 4 weeks and then only partially. Perhaps you should start looking for a PT and get your injury specific questions answered by a medical expert. Sometimes that can be done on the phone at no cost.

  4. mozer - I’ve been in PT now for about seven weeks (I am 17 weeks post-op) and I expect to go for at least another month or two due to lots of tightness remaining in my injured side.

    on the steri-strips - I left mine alone until they fell off by themselves. It took weeks and weeks, I think I still had the remnants of a couple at week 11 or 12, finally the last bit came off at a PT session.

  5. My surgery was like your….and this is my second time having spurs removed that cut into my tendon. First was my left foot 5 years ago almost to the day. I was in boot from July 10th and in reg shoes October 1st, had maybe 6 weeks of PT. This time its my right and its only been 2weeks but I’m allowed weight barring were as last time I was nwb four weeks. Once you get into pt it will move along fast but a good pt is the key!! I’m having trouble finding a shoe that equals my wedges in my boot lol. I do still use my walker to help balance me sometimes. I just need to have patients!!! Lol
