Numbness

Hi-  I am now 3 1/2 weeks post op and in a boot.  I had a completely severed (cut by and object, not ruptured) AT (right leg).   On the top of my foot from the middle to the right side is numb.  My foot is “puffy” in this area, even when there is no real swelling in other areas. Also the right side of my ankle is numb.     The PA at my Dr’s office said it was probably from nerve “damage” during surgery (moving stuff around), but I’m still concerned.  Is anyone else experiencing “prolonged” numbness?

  1. Motogirl,

I had surgery on my right Achilles last July (2008) and most of my numbness did not wear off until about 7 1/2 months post-op. The leg still feels a little weird but I can at least feel my toes now when I touch them. I had surgery on my left Achilles at the end of January (2009) and the numbness wore off at about 4 weeks post-op. I still have a problem with my toes always feeling ice cold but I can live with it. I wouldn’t worry yet.

  2. It sounds like you likely have nerve damage. Was it numb only after the surgery, or right after the accident? There are several nerves which pass right next to the achilles tendon. Nerves do often grow back eventually, but it may take up to a year. The outside of my foot was numb for several hours after the surgery, so I thought they cut my Sural Nerve, but it turned out that it was just some anesthetic they had used.
