Week 10 Day 1 - Scar Tissue?

I’ve started to really notice a palpable lump on the inside (medial side) of the tendon at about the height of my ankle bone, about the diameter of a grape and fairly firm but painless. It seems to disappear up into my leg when I point my ankle down (plantar flex). I guess this is a ball of scar tissue on the tendon. I haven’t been told to massage anything yet so I’m going to resist the temptation to poke at it!

  1. Deep massage of the tendon can start quite early so get stuck into it. Also best to see a doc about the lump. Although likely to be scar tissue it may be something else. Scar tissue will sometimes pop like your tendon did and people think it is a re-rupture. I also had a bump around the injury site but it went away with massage and work.

  2. Thanks Stuart - I have PT a week on Monday so will make sure to point it out then. I’ve heard about the scar tissue pop, sounds strangely relieving!

  3. I was told to start massaging my incision area a few weeks ago. It has definitely made a difference. Are you still in two shoes? How is that going?

  4. Yeah still in two shoes. I have good days and bad days. I haven’t used the boot much at all, I find the pressure aggravates the tendon now so I use crutches instead. I haven’t left the house on my own with no crutches yet, but on Saturday I got my girlfriend to carry them and managed maybe a quarter mile without using them. Sometimes I think I’m not making enough progress but overall I guess I am :)

  5. Just come back from physio and he did the first deep tissue massage. OH MY GOD it was soo painful, i kept trying to crawl away and he kept having to pull me back down. He is lucky he didn’t come out with a black eye. I really didn’t expect to have the massage as he didn’t do it last time. He was also quite rough with the foot manipulating and bending it and told me to be a bit more aggressive with my exercises. On the plus side once he had stopped inflicting pain my leg felt amazing, empowered! so yep deep tissue massage is great! sort of!he also described the tendon as ‘bulky’ and that i need to make sure i load it more in my exercises to ensure i get stronger quicker. Just for the record i am not a sports person so deep tissue massage is a new thing to me…. hence my surprise. I will be taking a wooden spoon to bite on next time!! When do you see the physio next Morcs?

  6. Awesome, sounds like it’s healed well then if you’re able to take that! I’m seeing my physio on Monday (would have been tomorrow ideally but she’s on holiday). That would put me at nearly 11 weeks post-rupture, I think you’re about 2-3 weeks ahead of me though so it might be another couple of weeks of patience I guess.

My tendon’s definitely bulky too compared to the “good” one. My calf muscle’s come back quite a bit, I think I’ve put back 1 of the 2 inches I lost.

Coincidentally my girlfriend just qualified as a soft-tissue therapist so she’s dying to have a go at it, but I won’t let her till I’ve asked my physio first :D

  7. I got the missus to do some massage on it last night. Not too firm, but today it’s less painful to walk on and just feels stiff, which is an improvement!

  8. That’s great mores, it would be great to have someone on hand to do a proper massage…. i am not sure i trust my husband it could end in divorce…. i always found calf muscle massage really painful! maybe there’s a common thread here!
