On the Road to full Recovery…..

As my husband would say…”Didn’t pay your tickets, huh?”

Cast off last Friday, with my daughter present, and she could not stop saying “ewwwww….Mommy what is that?”. It was pretty gross but now my leg can breathe. Got the CAM BOOT and doc ok’ed PWB ~50lbs - with the crutches of course. Been sleeping without the boot and it’s much more comfortable. My foot is still pretty swollen - looks like I am 9 months pregnant on my left foot - which is normal - at least that is what I have been told.

First shower was exhilarating and even though I am still on a bench it was so nice to have both feet in and be able to have a clean foot. My calf is so puny and looks rather odd to me as I have been an athlete all my life and my calves are rather strong - well were rather strong. Now my right leg is a beast!

Started PT yesterday and got a few exercises to work on 3-4x a dayas well as icing as much as possible to help with swelling. My range of motion is so much better after a few days in the boot. I am much slower with the boot, but I am really working on increasing the amount of weight during this PWB phase as my PT says we have 2 weeks to move from PWB to FWB. So I am looking at March 15 FWB in the boot of course. I have PT 2x a week and am really excited to move forward with this recovery. PT said at 12 weeks post-op I will be jogging so I have marked that on my calender and cannot wait.

4 weeks post-surgery today!!!

It’s been a month since my surgery and I am ready to walk again. The cast comes off tomorrow and I believe I get the BOOT. I hope I can get rid of my crutches as well even though I am really good on my crutches. Mother nature loves to dump more snow on the ground, and I have not slipped or fallen on any ice yet. I have the best support system and my husband is a pro at being Mr Mom! Both my kids are getting used to mommy on her crutches, but it will be a surprise once mommy can walk and get to them easier when they misbehave because my son knows that I am not too fast so he stays out of my grasp when he wants to.

This has been more trying to my patience as I am not a “sitter”, but my relationship with my mother, husband and children have all benefitted from this as I appreciate them all in new ways. I am ready for the hard work ahead, but I will never forget these lessons I have learned.
