Numbness in fingertips?

Hi everyone,

Just got the boot yesterday, 7 1/2 weeks post-op.  Glad to wash that leg!

Since I’ve been on crutches for almost 8 weeks, I’m assuming the numbness I feel in the 5 fingertips of my right hand is due to the constant pressure on my hands.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Funny thing, there is no numbness in my left fingertips, just my right.  The numbness stays around basically all day and night, and while it is not painful, it is annoying.  The doc thought it might be carpal tunnel, but since all 5 fingertips are numb, that would be not align with the standard symptoms (thumb, index, and middle finger, I’ve been told, are the ones usually effected with carpal tunnel).

Hopefully this goes away after I ditch the crutches!  Anyone else?

Hi Mike, I had some nasty tingling in my fingertips too but it wasn’t from the weight on my hands. It was from the rubber foam on the top of the crutches pushing on the inside of my arm on the nerve that runs down from the armpit to the elbow. I adjusted the height of my crutches so that they were lower and weren’t being pushed sideways by my ribs into my arm and things got a lot better. Maybe that will work for you.

Thank you, Jenny, for this advice. I will definitely try that!

I wound up with pain in my wrists, because I was really leaning on railings and walls, not just the crutches. As soon as I didn’t have to lean so much on stairs, the pain in the wrists went away, so I assume it was just muscle strain.

As usual, I think, give it time (a few days?) and hope it goes away! That’s my usual medical procedure - completely foolish, but very Irish!

Thanks, Mary. Sounds like I may be experiencing the same thing. Hopefully after I’m off the crutches, it will go away after several days.

I hope your recovery is going well!
