Post op appointment one

November 17, 2011 | |

I went to the doctor’s today for my two week appointment.  It turns out that my surgery was a bit more complex than I thought it had been.  Since he did not detach the Achilles, I thought it had not been as complex.  I had a bone spur removed, a hole drilled in the heel (I can’t remember why), and a tendon taken from the bottom of my foot to weave into the Achilles to strengthen it.  My doctor and another specialist who was working with him decided that removing the Achilles to get the other spur was not a good idea.  My primary physician had not wanted that either.  I now have a cast and will have to stay off my foot 4 more weeks.  I was hoping for a shorter time but it’s ok.  I want it to heal.  He was quite happy with the way the scars looks and how I am healing so far.  The stitches were removed today too.  Only a few hurt coming out.

I now have a knee walker.  I highly recommend this, although it does take some getting used to.  My insurance doesn’t cover it but the cost is going to be worth it.  I said it equaled my coffee money for a week, which I will need to do something about when I am done. That is too much to spend on coffee every week.

My doctor said it is ok for the PT to have me start trying to balance on my foot as long as it does not hurt. We’ll see how it goes.
