Two shoes!

11 weeks, 5 days post op, and finally two shoes!  It sure feels weird.  I have a small limp, but when I concentrate it is not there.

My Dr. said I should wear the hiking boots (I had one hiking boot to balance the size of the walking boot) for two weeks for support.

He also said be very careful not to mis-step; no running for four weeks, and no surfing for four more weeks.   Be careful on stairs and at the beach.

He said that at 12 weeks post op you are 70% healed, and that after 6 months post op your tendon is as strong as it will get , just about 100%.

What have most of you been wearing for shoes after the boot?  Any problems?

I am so freeking excited about this!  I am a bit worried, as that boot was pretty good protection, and it let folks around you know you had an injury.  Now when I walk it just looks like I am old, drunk, or REALLY slow!

Cheers!

  1. Congrats! Be sure to update your Achilles Profile so that it shows 2-Shoes!

  2. Mike…..great to hear about graduating to two shoes. I am in a quandry now about that. My PT kind of said go two shoes until it bothers you then throw the boot on. I want a more sure direction….wear the boot or not. Around the house I have been walking, at work I wear the boot. I have my 10 week post op Friday, so I’m hoping my doc will give me more direction. She is pretty laid back though. She will probably say let pain be your guide, or something very profound like that. lol Keep up the good work!

  3. jonas Im where you are at recovery-wise. I am still in the boot but take it off at home and am no longer sleeping w it on (shhhh, dont tell my doc). I do some theraband stuff and some stim. I am obviously very cautious and moving slowly but I feel good.

Mike, was your foot swollen or bigger when you finally put your other shoe on?

I was shuffling on the beach at week 5 for short intervals, not very smart, esp after hearing that your doc said be very careful at the beach.

Good work…good luck on your continued progress.

  4. Walshie,

My foot was not swelling at all with the boot on.

I think it is because once you are in shoes, you start flexing your anckle with every step, at least I do, as I am very consiously making sure I do not develop a limp, which is VERY easy and almost natural.

The swellig is mostly on the sdie opposite my surgery point, and above teh shoe line.

I just put some Super Feet in my Nikes on the suggestion of my PT, and I think it is helping a bit.

Be VERY careful on the uneven soft sand. That is where you can mis-step.

I was at the beach for 4 hours yesterdak and swam a lot. It is scary going out in fairly big surf, as you get knocked around a lot, but it was SO nice to finally get in the ocean again!

My foot is always normal sized in the morning, and swolen at night. I ice it every evening before bed.

  5. Good info, Mike, thanks

  6. Hi Mike,

Have you returned to surfing? I’m at the 3 month mark and am dying to get back in the water. What have your experiences been?

    Rob
