Cast #2, 20 days post-op

Staples removed

I got my second fiberglass cast this afternoon.  This one required that I bring my toes up to 90 degrees.  I have never felt such tightness before.  It took a good 15 or 20 minutes just to loosen it up enough to get up to 90, and then some will power to hold it there while it was casted in that position.  Not the most fun I have ever had.  There is some odd attachment to the bottom that helps keep the weight back on my heel, and I am told to start putting a little weight on it and walking in as normal a stride as I can.  With the help of the crutches of course.  So that is good news.  It is nice to be making progress and moving towards the rehab phase.

It is very tricky to try to walk with this crazy thing that is attached to the bottom of my cast.  Partly because I am nervous to walk at all and put any weight on it at all, and partly because I have not walked at all in a month, and I feel unsure.  It’s going to take some figuring out for sure.

Michael, did you get the weird tingles in your foot when you put it down and put weight on it? I noticed that when I did…strange sensation. I am not sure how degrees mine can go yet, but I don’t think anywhere near 90. I feel extreme tightness too when I stretch my foot up. So since you are in a cast, did the tightness subside?

I haven’t had too many tingles in my foot when I put weight on it. Maybe a little, but that is too be expected as your seral nerve can be aggravated a bit during the operation. It does takes a while to heal. It definitely took some work to get my foot up to 90 degrees. I had to warm it up pretty good over the course of 15 minutes or so, and then hold it at that position while the cast was put on. It felt tight and pretty sore the rest of that day and a little the next day, but it totally subsided soon enough. I actually just got home from the gym after doing about 5 minutes on the revolving stair climber. It felt pretty good, but a little awkward, and probably not the safest thing in the world. It feels a little sore now, but now that it is elevated, it already fees better.
