Hello everyone. I ventured back here to see what was going on in the ATR world. I just wanted to give some positive news for people who are just starting out in this long process. I have stated in my earlier blogs that I had a great doctor and a quick recovery. I am now 3 months shy of 2 years since my achilles tore playing basketball. This sport seems to be a common theme among all of these reports.
I returned to playing basketball 8 months from my injury. I was a bit nervous, but all went well. I have now been playing 2-3 times per week for the past year plus. I also am able to run 2-3 miles and do everything that I was able to do before my injury. I have spoken to people who have blown out there knees and never recovered, so I guess the achilles was better to injure than my knees.
I guess I just wanted to say keep the faith. I know that right now it seems like you are going through hell, which you are. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. You WILL return back to your old self and be able to do all of the things you love to do. I have made it and so can you. Good Luck.

Man, I sure haven’t been here in awhile. I guess that since I have been pretty much back to normal, I haven’t thought of these days lately. I made it back!!! About a month ago, I started to play basketball again, which is how I began this journey in the first place. I was extremely nervous the first night I played. I don’t wear a brace because my surgeon said there really isn’t anything that will help. I just make sure that I stretch out real good and warm up with some jogging before hand. I have gotten myself in very good shape since this whole journey began. I am very dedicated to the gym and the treadmill. Anyways, basketball went very well and I have been playing once a week for about a month now. It feels great, because I really enjoy playing. I just wanted to say to everyone..Keep your chin up, it won’t be long and you will be back to normal.

Hello everyone. It’s been awhile since my last post, but that’s mainly because there hasn’t been anything too exciting. It looks like I’m done with physical therapy. My company switched insurance this month and my pt provider does not take our insurance. That was just wonderful news. It really sucks when the insurance company dictates how your recovery goes.
Anyways, at my 3 month check-up, I was cleared by the doctor and I do not have to come back. Yay!! I told him thanks for doing a great job and “no offense, but I hope I never see you again.” He just laughed and agreed. In this appointment I was cleared to begin jogging. Luckily I had 1 more appointment before I found out about my insurance and my therapist made sure that my jogging was done right and I was not favoring my bad leg.
Off I go to the gym, which is in my apartment complex. I started out on the treadmill at a brisk walk. My leg felt good, so I started jogging. To my amazement it felt really good. There was a little tightness, but that was about it. I figured I would last about 5 minutes, but shockingly I was able to job for 2 miles at about an 8 minute mile clip. I could have kept going, but I didn’t want to push it. I was in good shape before the accident, so I guess I did not get too far out of shape. I have been running 2 miles per day for about a week now, and I am going to go to 3 in the next couple of days.
Everyone stay positive. You will get through this.

As I stated earlier, I am doing very well and progressing quickly. I am now thinking about what to expect when I am 6-12 months out from surgery. I would really like to play basketball again sometime around December or so, but my family thinks I’m a moron for even considering it again. They tell me you aren’t 25 any more, you are 35. Has anyone resumed their activity that they injured themselves in? Were you scared to death at first? What did you do to get ready for it? Or, should I just hang up my basketball shoes for good? I really appreciate hearing from anyone.
