Call me “Jello Calf”

Posted on April 28, 2009.

Its been close to 5 weeks now. My cast is off and I finally got my black boot. Its a MaxTrax by DJC. Pretty nice, but heavy.

My calf is about half the size of my other (now well defined). Ironic that hopping around on one foot makes the other foot stronger. Geez.
If I hold my right calf up, it flaps in the wind.

Ankle is just as weak, and it sometimes quivers when I try to move it. I *think* it supposed to be this weak, but I kind of expected more flexion in the foot up and down, also in the ankle. Anyone else have a super limited range of motion when they got their cast off??? Sometimes I even question if the tendon is attached? (the doctor didn’t say anything though!)

I’m going to start some of those limited ankle exercises posted on the main page. I need something to do!

I got my cast off after 5 weeks and also had a jelly calf that my son thought was hysterical. It’s been almost 4 weeks since then and my calf is already much better looking and solid feeling. It’s still not as strong as it needs to be but the physical therapy is helping alot. For the first 3 weeks of PT I did almost only range of movement excercises for the ankle and the ROM is almost what it is with the good foot.
You’re not alone with the feelings your having. Good luck with the rest of your recovery.

Unfortunately my calf is tiny and wiggly too. My calves have always been one of my strongest and favorite muscles since I’m a sprinter, and it’s been sad to see the atrophy over the past few weeks. When I’m standing with all my weight on my good foot and I rest bad foot on the floor I raise my bad leg with my toes, and I can still see a little definition. It still feels very weak to do even that however.

Also, when I first got my boot I thought my scar was going to bust open when I had to flex my foot to 90 degrees! But after that day I started flexing my foot in my boot, and even the next day it was far better. I did stretching exercises on my own before and after every shower, because that’s the only time I ever took off my boot. Now I almost have almost full range of motion!

Good Luck to you!

Thanks for the notes of encouragement. I’m trying to work a little at a time. I’ve already seen progress in just a few days!
