Common Threads

Funny how much everyone’s stories are similar, but also the differences stand out.  I wanted to highlight a few I found interesting:

Which leg?

The thing about them asking which leg….  they did that to me to.  I glad they did.  Apparently they turn you over after you are knocked out and the right foot goes to the left side.  Same thing with the marker too.  The ortho marked it with his initials.

Pain Management

I didn’t get a spinal or nerve block like other people did, just the general anesthesia.  After waking up, I felt pretty good.  I also only took Percocet for two days.  The first day after the surgery was the worst.  Swelling and throbbing pain.  After that, the side effects from the narcotic were worse than the pain itself (hiccups, heartburn, irritability (bad) and backed up “plumbing”).  Three days out of surgery and I’m on no meds, not even Tylenol.

Elevation
Elevation seems to be the key for me as well.  Keeping the leg “above the heart” is a good rule. Pain when I lower it too.  I like how my toes turn purple, but I figure that can be good!

You are really blessed that your pain level allowed you to stop taking all meds after only 3 days.

Hi Matt -
My surgeon put the word “Yes” on my leg!
I am about 6 weeks post-op…and even now
I am elevating at night to help with some
residual swelling…it does make a difference.
Feel good…
