The start of all this….

Posted on March 31, 2009.

Looking back, I don’t realize much of what I did when I did it.  Seems like everyone was suprised - count me in.

It was a great day for football - by the river - young (I’m under 30) and I had caught a few TD passes. Looking good.  We’d prayed before playing, God was looking out for all us “weekend warriors.”

Next play, covering Rob Miles…. He cuts back, I follow.  Nothing out of the ordinary.  Uh oh.  Felt like someone hit me with a rock on heel?  Who threw something at me?  I glance down after hearing that “pop.  A strange feeling comes over my heel.  Now its painful. Jeff, a PT from our church runs over, and in a way only Jeff can..says “Dude….”  I knew it was pretty bad.

Strangely enough, I wasn’t in very much pain after I did it.  Seemed much better than a sprained ankle (I’ve done that quite a number of times) and I’d be back on my feet in a few days.  Not so fast..

I had surgery on the 27th of March.  Pretty painless as surgeries go, I suppose.  The day after was the worst.  So, for anyone undergoing this, it only gets better.  4 days out and I’m doing alright.  Just “enjoying” the time as best I can.

hey matt, i remember exactly what you were thinking…that it didn’t hurt nearly as bad as a sprained ankle. i tore mine on a friday night and didn’t see an ortho til monday morning. i spent the entire weekend elevating and icing the leg, but to no avail. you definitely did the right thing by getting surgery. i have to warn you that the next couple of weeks are gonna hurt when you lower your leg to crutch around…the blood rushes directly to the wound. nothing a little vicodin can’t cure ;) check out my blog - i’m about 9 weeks post-op. http://www.achillesblog.com/famin. Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement. These blogs are a great help to all us newbies who have no idea of what recovery we’re up against. Like you, I thought I was too young for something like this to happen. I’m no exercise fanatic by any means, but I think I tend to push myself too much when I play any sport.

Seems like all our stories have their similarities!
