My History of a stubborn heel spur
First Surgery Feb 23rd Had Heel Spur (haglunds deformity) Non weight bearing for a few weeks, then a boot and PT. Foot was more painful and had this pulling felling from bottom of scar an up about 4 in. Right side of ankle would swell and twinge and hurt the more I walked too. After 4 months of more steroids, anti inflammatory and then a cortisone shot and cream… nothing helped. PT was torture. Podiatrist was not sure what to do with me… so he mentioned a second opinion and I went for it. Now July 6th I had surgery with an Ortho Ankle and Foot Surgeon for Tendon debridement and FHL Transfer. She said the tendon did not heal from the first surgery months ago etc…. So, Here I am Day 7 Post OP. I’m hoping for the best. Pain not too bad but need leg up a lot or it swells up… use ice too. Back at work in the office w foot raised. My right side of ankle still hurts some…. the stitches hurt, I’m told I have 2 incisions now on the left side of the foot. Non Weight bearing for a month….. I get the cast off July 24th…. then see what happens… back the boot again and PT I’m assuming I just want to be able to walk with so much pain. UGH… You take it for granted when each step out hurts like hell. I hope this surgery will help me……. Wanted to give you all a little history as I progress. Oh and I’m 54…. so does age matter really on healing…… OLD AGE is not for Sissys….but I want to be mobile and enjoy my life again. .

Hi there,
Michelle here. I had the same surgery on July 2. I am 52. I got my hard cast on 2 days ago. I know the pain and frustration you are going through; you are not alone! This is my second surgery on the “other ankle”. Like you, I just want to walk without pain! Going to the Orthopedic Surgeon was a good decision. I am sure you will heal properly this time. I also spent some wasted time with a podiatrist and was not satisfied with my care. I am sure a podiatrist has its place, but the Haglunds issue seems to need surgical attention, not a massage, a shot, or PT (yes, I tried all that too). As I said before, my ankle #1 feels a million times better than it did before surgery, and 7 months after surgery, it is at ~80% of strength and balance (mind you, I only rehabbed it for 2 months before my other ankle went bad). With ankle #2 in a cast, I am sure my “good ankle” will get a lot of practice balancing on 1 foot :). The hardest part is definitely mental–but we will get through it. Time really does go by fast (at our age) and before we know it, we will be back on our 2 feet again.
Keep us posted on your progress! I will check back often.
Michelle

I also had the same surgery and am 52 years old. I am at 17 weeks post op but have only been weight bearing since week 11. My incision got infected so I actually never wore a boot since it irritated the incision. I went from NWB to 2 shoes WBAT. I still don’t have very good balance so I use a cane. I am also experiencing lower back/ hip pain from being weak because I was immobile for so long. An ATR is such a long, difficult recovery and at our age it is that much more difficult. I wish both of you well as you recover and would love to be kept posted of how you are doing.

I am so tired wearing this (splint-Cast)
It seemed easier just being bandaged after my first surgery. Now this still thing is heavy and I’m frustrated dragging it around…
Scooter helps, its just difficult…. I’m counting the days.
