Good luck and heal fast mariejones98! If you can, just relax until the cast comes off and the stitches come out. Keep you leg elevated as much as you can, keep pressure off the stitches, use ice behind your knee several times a day. Once the stitches come out you should progress quickly through weight bearing and recovery.
I ruptured my achilles tendon and had surgery on July 7th. I am in a cast and have my first postop July 17th. My doctor was not specific about returning to work but I am just curious as to other people’s experience.
I am also wondering about the normal week 2 postop protocol because I was planning on attending a conference on the 19th but I m planning on canceling because I would be on my own and difficult to elevate and ice. The way I’m feeling now I think I should just rest until about the end of the 3rd week. Any experiences, comments are welcome as I need to decide about the trip. My wife would just drop me off and then needs to work.
John, as usual, it depends. I worked remotely part-time for three weeks before going back into the office. Some people don’t have that luxury. If all you do is sit at a desk, and access is smooth, I wouldn’t hesitate to go back once the swelling and pain subside.
Same thing for the conference. I personally wouldn’t risk it out of fear of getting tripped up, someone bumping into me, or overusing my good leg, but that’s probably more paranoia than a realistic possibility.
I am 5 days post op as well. I am still using pain meds (Percocet). Is that what you are using as well. I am eager to get off meds but what can you do. How is your pain and what meds do you use. I would like to switch to Tylenol but do not think it would be as helpful. I too am looking forward to getting stitches out. Have a great day
JOHNJK in my opinion if you can rest, elevate, and ice for the first three weeks you are much better off. I was NWB for 2 weeks so just taking it easy with my foot up was very helpful. I was able to work from home for week 3-4, but while I was doing so I also began physical therapy. I still got pain after having my foot below my waist during week 3 and 4, so I just kept it elevated when I could. Week 4 I started FWB but still noticed a bit of swelling and pain at the end of the day, so I went in to the office but tried to leave early to get home and elevate my leg. From week 6-8 putting in full days at the office (I work at a desk) has been manageable for me.
KMAY312 I did not use any pain meds whatsoever after the nerve block wore off. It hasn’t hurt that bad and it is nice having a clear head and no side effects. I admit to having a stiff cocktail on some evenings - that seems to help
If you read enough of these blogs you’ll see swelling stops well into the year, though I can imagine that there are a few in which it stops sooner, I’d say between 4 - 8 months from the blogs. Swelling increases with activity. I stopped swelling at 7 months. Though at almost 9 months I had to ice last week after a day of hiking.

Well, I’m at work today is day 7…. Have to keep my leg up or it swells. Ice helps.
I try not to take a pain pill but at times I take one.
I only hope that after all this I can walk again without pain.
I’m really worried.

Anyone have any swelling on the outside of ankle?
Kind of a tingling sore feeling, then it swells.
I can still feel this feeling after this surgery inside the cast. Not sure what it is at all.
