Sleeping without boot cramps in calf

Last night was the 1st time sleeping without the boot, this was a very scary experience but it was so warm here i had to try it. I was given the go ahead by the physio. However, upon waking this morning i had a terrible calf cramp in the ATR leg. It wasnt a “rupture” pain, at least i dont think but i am still concerned. My ankle and ROM feels amazing today though which is really strange. Is it possible that i might have ruptured it in my sleep?

  1. Inbetween that stage of waking and dozing I used to get muscle cramp regularly as the temptation to stretch the ATR leg is great as that freedom of being, in my case without a cast ( I never had a boot) was immense! Thankfully there was no damage. Like yourself I panicked and thought I may have re-ruptured, and I would check to see the tendon was still intact by gently pinching the muscle and looking for the flexion. I am 11 weeks on and my physio said it would take some considerable force to re-rupture.

  2. Hi there, thanks for the reply. I tried to do the Thompson test but dont know if im doing it correctly, as i do not see any movement. I am not sure where to pinch and which muscle. I am going to see the physiotherapist later on today for the hip pain…

  3. I never heard of any cases of someone re-rupturing in their sleep (Not saying it has never happened), but based of of that assumption I would think that you are ok. When I asked my doc, a smiliar question he laughed at the notion.

  4. Similar experience here in first week with splint and ace bandage which was loose as swelling subsided. It was fine. Likely just that you were sleeping in a more neutral position. That’s my guess.

  5. Hi, yes i went to the physio yesterday. She said that i should be ok and i should get used to sleeping without boot. I also went to buy a new shoe yesterday, a pair of trainers actually. I can feel the difference already. This is for the rehab and the transition from the boot to full time into 2 shoes which im hoping will happen really soon..
