One year anniversary

August 20th, 2013

A few milestones have passed since my last post. One year since I tore my achilles — the first time. One year since my first surgery (I had to wait a couple of weeks).  I am unfortunately not out of the woods yet. My ankle was infected at the surface and I was on anti-biotics at the beginning of August.  And I believe the infection is not completely gone. My surgeon wants to do an MRI to see if there is an abscess which would require another surgery. I would like to think that this would be minor and not have me off my feet for too long. But considering everything, I don’t think I will get off so easy. Trying to stay philosophical about it all (or maybe it is denial). Anyone having similar issues? How long does it take to recover from abscess surgery? Should I be digging out my crutches which I have not used since March?

Hi lizzie, really feel for you. I have only done 8 weeks!
It is really difficult to answer your questions until after your MRI or even maybe after surgery if you require it. Sometimes a wound infection can be very superficial and easily treated with long term antibiotics. Occasionally, you can get extensive infection with abscess formation which requires an open operation and drainage. Although usually if there is a lot of infection with abscesses the skin and soft tissue is swollen and red. The MRI will give you an answer.
I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Ah nooo. That sounds awful. I’ve had an abscess opened and drained but they don’t take that long to recover from. However, if its at the site of your previous incision then I have no idea how long that could take to heal. Stay positive and know either way, it can’t be as long as the recovery from the initial achilles rupture!!

Thank-you for the encouraging words. I had the MRI at 12:45 am… strange but true. It was pretty easy. I will get the results next week. In the meantime I have been religiously soaking my foot every night in Epsom Salts and that seems to be working. The infected area is less red, less swollen and less warm. So, I am hoping hoping hoping that it will resolve itself without further intervention. Good luck in your recoveries. It might take time but you will get there all the same.
