Ahead of goal/ compression stockings?
Within 2 days of PWB I was able to go from 2 crutches to 1 crutch. No pain, no problem. Noticing a lot more swelling in toes and feet now. I am thinking I should probably get compression stockings as I really did not have swelling until now? My OS never suggested them- so I need to find out what type you suggest and do you wear them all the time or only at certain times under boot. I am almost 5 weeks post op. I don’t see OS until 4/9. Her instructions said PWB as tolerated - should I try FWB or just wait until I see her next week. She is also removing 2 wedges to 1 wedge in my boot at that time. Will that impact my PWB/ FWB ie do you typically have to go back to two crutches until you adjust to the 1 wedge?

From my experience: The swelling is normal, don’t worry about it, just address it with RICE. I had medline socks that I got at the hospital when I had the surgery (you can goolge medline compression socks) I only wore them in the boot.
If she said PWB as tolerated and at week 5 you feel ready to try FWB I’d say try it, but that’s only because I was FWB week 3 with no aids (my protocol was to be FWB sometime between week 3 - week 6 whenever it happened) in the boot and had no problems. I also think it’s fine to wait until you see her again to try it. I don’t think it’s going to set you back. It’s more mental than physical. Obviously if you decide to try it and you have any pain stop. When my wedges were removed it felt weird for the first day then I got used to it. Not pain, just a weird pulling at the repair site feeling. I think it’s different for everyone. I never used crutches with my boot on week 3 forwards even with the wedge removals. I used them with my boot off until I was fully in two shoes between week 7/8.
These are stats from this sites Marathon Tracker:
Average Time to PWB: 4 wks 6 days
Average Time to FWB: 6 wks 5 days
Average Time to 2-Shoes: 9 wks 6 days
As always, take what’s helpful and leave the rest!
I from PWB to FWB in a matter of 6 days. My OS wanted me to stay PWB until Apr 23rd which is my next apt so I went and downloaded the functioning non op protocol and began following that. I only have aches in the top part of my foot, but not Achilles area so I think that’s ok. Not pain, just aches after I’ve walked a bit. I just gradually increased my weight bearing and before you know it, you’re FWB.
