2 weeks post surgery…finding ways to get some cardio!
Hi, I ruptured my Right Achilles Tendon 3 weeks ago & am now 2 weeks post surgery. I am used to working out every day & the NWB status is torture. I have been doing abs & upper body workouts but miss my “runners high” :). So far for cardio I’ve done lightweight arms while sitting on a chair with my upper body going forward & backward to incorporate the core to the beat of some good rock music &
have tried the rowing machine at the gym and that was ok too …just a little unnatural for me! Does anyone have any good ideas? I am a 50 year old woman & my metabolism isn’t what it used to be. It’s hard to be stuck at home all day & not eat! I have been keeping busy at home…I’ve got a walker on wheels with a bench to lay my knee on & can do almost all housework including vaccuming, sweeping, mopping etc. If I can get someone to drive me I can even shop. The motorized shopping carts at the supermarkets are really fun! Another cardio workout includes doing “laps” in my house using the crutches but that gets boring since my house isn’t that big. I do have a wii but haven’t tried anything yet…maybe tennis or boxing games? Help!

I’m going to save myself a bunch of typing, and direct you towards one of my old blog posts:

In a nutshell, I don’t think there’s much you can do to really load your cardio system until your incision is healed up enough to start swimming. Some folks have found that they can pedal a bike (in a boot/walking cast) pretty hard too.

Thanks Ryan, I love your blog! I wish I could kayak but it’s a little too cold now…we had our first snowflakes Saturday! I can’t wait to swim though…I just got my stitches out today so I probably should wait a week or two? Unfortunatly I can’t drive either (right foot). I wonder if I can drive with my left foot…my husband says no way but I’m thinking it might be doable…

Of course you can drive with your left foot! I have been doing for about two weeks and you get so use to it that you don’t even think about it! Good luck!

The worry with swimming too soon is infection. Everything I’ve read/heard says: don’t mess around with it. It can be a very serious complication. Make sure your incision is completely closed/sealed up before swimming.
I agree with Nivergvup- I started driving “lefty” 9 days after surgery. Of course, this assumes your car is an automatic ;-).

Thank you! I needed these replies to convince my husband…He keeps taking my car to work. I think he’s afraid I’ll try driving(though he denies it). His car has a stick shift. ARGGGGG!

Thanks Ryan. I am waiting …especially since I will be using the pool at the gym (lots of chemicals & other people). I can’t wait to drive!! Keep doing your videos…so inspiring! I think I’ll make some videos of my own (they won’t be inspiring to you but maybe to someone fresh from surgery). They’ll probably make you laugh though.
