What can I really expect after surgery with the splint instead of cast?  Not sure

Surgery Scheduled This Thursday

Talked to OS who said that I would be in splint for two weeks and move every two weeks for a total of 6 weeks before PT. Apprhension as I am not a sitter and have been down for 4 days with more ahead of me.

    I had a splint for about a week, and then a cast.

    I hated the splint. My splint included some plaster components. Everyone who has commented is correct, it allows your foot to breathe while also keeping it place I found it to be extremely painful and was very happy to move into the cast.

    They stuck a splint on me for 8 days after surgery, then went into the boot (1st time) and a cast (2nd time). I agree that the splint allowed for swelling, but the ice pack seemed to work better on the splint too - especially for the first 48 hours after surgery. Be very careful when moving around with the splint - NWB!!!!!! and watch out for anything what could cause you to stumble and land on that foot! I got a scooter for the 2nd surgery and it was a lifesaver.

    The splint, as opposed to a cast, also allows the foot and leg to swell without cutting off the circulation, while still providing protection for your foot.

    I think the splint is on so that the wound can drain and the dressing can be changed. Many people skip the cast and go straight to a boot.
