10 days post -op
Posted on March 26th, 2012 by leftybuck
Thanks to everyone for the feedback from my first post, “another one bites the dust”. This afternoon I went in for the follow up and had my staples removed. It was an awesome / scary feeling to have my cast off temporarily. Wiggled my toes, scratched my leg, moved my foot (ever so slightly). Then unfortunately the doctor ordered another cast for 3 more weeks :(.

That’s a bummer… I don’t know all the details, but that seems extremely conservative compared to what most docs seem to be prescribing these days - did your doc give a reason for almost five weeks of complete immobilization? Most of what I’ve read (and experienced) for a “standard” ATR points to benefits of weight-bearing a lot earlier…
My doctor also put me in a splint for ten days following my surgery. I have an appt next Monday, April 2nd, to have my stitches removed and a new cast put on for 3 more weeks.
I don’t know the reason for 5 weeks of complete immobilization, but I intend to ask. Hang in there Leftybuck. You’re not alone.
I visit doc tomorrow - 10 days post-op as well. He told me initially I’d be in a cast for roughly 4 weeks from that point. So I’m in the same boat as you LeftyBuck. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
From what I’ve been reading, the docs in the US are still following the more conservative methods, while European docs are more aggressive with their treatment plans. I had the splint, then the cast for 4 weeks, w/ NWB. Now, I’m in a boot for 3 weeks w/ PWB before PT begins. Both methods will get you there, if you follow the doc’s and PT’s orders.
Hope your recovery goes well!
I was discussing this with my doc today - the Euro an US treatment plans. Yes, the US does still follow the conservative approach, while the Euro approach is, what my US doc called, “experimental,” meaning that it’s still a relatively young way to treat the injury and hasn’t been around long enough for them to want to use it. Either way, whatever gets you there I ain’t complaining.
I’m right there with you, I got the staples removed yesterday and loved that feeling of freedom…but then I had another cast put on too. Just think, 3 more weeks and then it’s off for good! (I hope)
Hang in there! I was booted after two weeks, like a few of other USA sufferers, but on crutches and not to start physical therapy until past my six week appointment. The time up until now has gone fast. In physical therapy, it’s slowing down a bit as gains are much gradual.
