Before reading this post, please be aware that this is a tragic story of a women killing her husband that was printed in one of the leading UK tabloid newspapers recently. As achilles tendon injuries are at the forefront of my mind, I read this and thought ‘OH MY GOD’, how cruel can someone be. Anyway, for those who are not to squeamish, here is the link to the story:

Laurie,
Wouldn’t have put you down as a Sun reader but.. WOW, what an absolutely awful tragic horrific story, it really did make my toes curl, what kind of sick women could do that to anyone. Horrendous.
Annie
I think this story is the twist on “dog bites man”, because in Pakistan, the men often set the women on fire, and if the husband dies, there’s still the custom of suttee (widow-burning on the funeral pyre), even the British could not totally eliminate, as with foot-binding of girls in China.
I think the detail about stopping his running shows that this wife did know anatomy and physiology. It might have been punishment enough for what he did, which is not mentioned in the story. Would you set your partner on fire for no reason?
Luton in Bedfordshire is where my (Irish-born) aunt and her grown children live. Domestic violence amongst immigrants there is notorious - but normally the women are the victims. The idea of women and children as chattel holds sway amongst their men.
