Almost 6 weeks post op. I am now in 2 shoes!!! The past couple weeks I wittled my way from 2 crutches, to one crutch, to a cane, to now boot free. Its really weird to see my foot in a shoe again. My foot is still really swollen. I have definately have to still take it REALLY easy……but I am progressing! I think its time to hang up the lacrosse cleats for good. After the second time around, I can not afford to do this again.

Larry, after the second time around, you’d probably have to grow a third leg to tear another AT, even if you return to aggressive lacrosse! Delayed re-ruptures like that are extremely rare, while tearing the other side (as you and I both did) is pretty common.
Don’t be shy about slapping on the boot again for special occasions, like walking in crowded or otherwise scary places, or doing things (for me it was mostly bicycling) that make your AT nervous, or should. You’re starting the most vulnerable phase of the whole rehab, so Watch Your Step — ALL of them!!
Comment by normofthenorth 08.11.10 @ 2:38 amGood for you Larry. Next week will mark my 6wk post op and I am going to be going back into a Aircast. Curious to know if you are driving yet. I am being told that I won’t probably be able to drive for another 4-6 wks.
Comment by bccatc 08.12.10 @ 11:49 amSince I am off pain meds, I have been driving for about 3 wks now. I have an automatic which made this possible. I tried using my left foot but I am too hard wired with the right. I drove with the boot which worked out really well. Now I’m starting to drive without it. Although timid, I’m using a little more caution. So far so good. I had to drive so soon because I was loosing my mind at home and relying on people to give me rides was a pain. Good luck and be careful! It def takes a min to get used to driving again.
Comment by Larrylove 08.12.10 @ 1:59 pmhey larry, i also recently had my 2nd ATR playing indoor soccer 2 weeks ago. tried to switch direction quickly, heard a pop and it felt like someone had kicked me in the heel. as soon as i saw there was no one there, i knew immediately because it happened the EXACT same way the first time i did it to my other foot 6 yrs ago. i got my surgery july 29, 2010, was in a plaster cast for 2 weeks, and just got put into a full weight bearing fiberglass cast today. FWB after only 2 weeks seems really quick. and apparently i’m supposed to be in this thing for 4 weeks, and then it’s straight into 2 shoes at 6 weeks post-op like you. no boot at all. seems almost too quick to me but i guess maybe that’s a good thing. the last time i think i was in the boot for 5-6 weeks with 5 degree increments every week (or something like that) and wasn’t into 2 shoes until week 8 or 9. anyways, good luck with the recovery from a fellow double ATR.
Comment by kaston 08.12.10 @ 10:45 pmHey my fellow double ATR! Ya know this time around feels like a lot faster as well. Maybe perspectives have changed over the years. As u know, it’s a long process either way they’re still giving me a 6mo time frame. Stay at your own speed within reason. I find my ortho is soooo out of touch with reality with his God like complex. Just take it slow and steady. Good luck!
Comment by Larrylove 08.13.10 @ 7:13 amDo u plan on returning to soccer? I think it’s nothing but the elliptical for me from now on, since I did this playing lax twice. I can’t afford to get hurt like this again. Good thing for aflac!!
Again, Larry, you’re being fearful at the wrong time! Being worried about the other leg after you’ve recovered from your first ATR makes perfect sense, because you’re at risk.
Being worried after you’ve recovered from tearing them BOTH makes much less sense, because you’re apparently at lower risk than you were before you tore them!
If the elliptical turns you on, go for it, but don’t give up lacrosse because of the risk of tearing your other (third??) AT!
Comment by normofthenorth 08.13.10 @ 3:09 pmyeah it feels a lot faster and maybe this is because i’m getting older but i’m actually not as bothered by the cast as i thought i’d be. i guess it’s because i know what to expect and am not constantly wondering if i should be doing something i’m not already.
i definitely plan on returning to soccer. the last time i did it i think i was playing soccer 5 months post op. maybe this is wrong, but i really feel that it’s stronger (although slightly less flexible) due to all the surrounding scar tissue after the repair/recovery. i figure that if one of them is going to re-rupture then it’s going to happen regardless of whether or not i play soccer. if not soccer, it’ll be going up the stairs or something
