VACOCast vs the other boot

So I spent last night tinkering between the default boot the doc set me up with and the VACO. The VACO has a smaller footprint, which is nice, but the other thing is I do not like the big rocker sole. Went without it right away. I also had a bit too much flexion on first go, and dang that hurt. The biggest difference in walking with them is the vaco cast doesn’t let me cheat. I can use the other boot, and almost limp it in, vs actually using a walking motion. I think it gives me more confidence in the other boot, but sure feels like a false confidence.

I’ll keep trucking with this, but right now I’m less confident in the vaco, but more accountable. I used the vaco around the house, but found myself putting the other on to get to work. And, despite the four straps, really seems like more effort getting that vaco on.

  1. I just went from 20′ to 10′ in the Vacocast and, with Norm’s advice, did the switch right before I went to bed. Even so, I can feel the stretch in my tendon this morning. According to the boot tech at the hospital, I was also supposed to switch to the smaller sole, even thought the Vaco manual says not to switch to the smaller sole until you are at 5′. I tried the smaller sole this morning, and it did not go well, so am staying with the achilles sole a bit longer. Anyone have luck going to the smaller sole at 10′ or higher in the Vaco?

  2. I’m at 20′ with the smaller sole, feels much better than the big sole. Maybe I’d like the big sole more if I was using the even-up in the house, will give that a shot tonight.

  3. Even hips are Good, peg-leg walking is Bad! Over-dorsiflexing with WB while fooling around with any boot is Very Bad!

I got nothing on Vaco tech details.

  4. There may be readers of achillesblog who wonder what the fuss is about with Oped’s Vaco boot so I have included here a link to the US subsidiary’s website which includes a couple of videos, one of which covers the Vaco Achilles Pro.

Other sites for UK, Australia, etc. Countless YouTube videos too. No doubt Aircast and other have similar sites, I don’t know.

  6. Just switched myself and definitely agree that the VACO takes longer. Took me about 5 minutes to get it on the first time! Now, two days later, I’m getting in and out of it in about 20 seconds. Practice and confidence helps a lot.

I actually like the rocker sole in the Vaco much more than my original boot (DJO ROM Walker), but a lot of that was tied to feeling more confident in the Vaco than I did in my doctor issued boot (so, the opposite of what you’re saying). Funny how much the mind can interfere!

  7. I also have two Boots, the vacocast and the aircast. I was in the aircast until week 5 when I transitioned into the vacocast. The rocker sole is great once you’ve figured it out, because it’s so much easier to maintain normal gait. My PT did not know the vacocast but he’s thrilled. You definitely need the evenup on the other foot, in addition I also put some more padding inside the shoe to add height to the good foot. I’m in week 8 now and will use the hinging on the vacocast for the first time, it should make the transition into two shoes easier.
At night I wear the aircast, I find it more comfortable than the vacocast. The vacocast has a very snug and sometimes even tight feeling, that didn’t work for me in order to sleep comfortably. The aircast allows me to sleep with a slightly looser fit. Probably not ideal and not for everyone, but it worked for me.

  8. Pete - I think I found me sweet spot. I’m at +15 with the wedge insert, and find it pretty comfy. Using a heellift in a tennis shoe indoors, and the even up outdoors.
I’m sleeping in just a compression sock, and actually invested in real ones vs the ones the doctor gave me. The real ones are a lot tighter, and hold the firm a bit.
One thing I’ve noticed, and I don’t know if this is common, my heel kills. I can’t figure out if its from walking again, or its just so damn dry. I’ve been loading up on moisturizer on the bad leg, but the rubbing of a sock is enough for me to be annoyed.
Oh, other note, I wore a smaller tight sock, the compression created almost a hard ring of something about the sock…was quite the treat to massage that out.

  9. I’m 44, week 6, nonoperative, NWB and in my 2nd cast that comes off next week Nov 19th. My doctor at Kaiser informed me that they use Donjon boots and I am wondering if I should buy the Vacocast. I’m concerned about my PT not knowing how to work with it, resulting in poor results and risk for injury.

Cost is not the issue. I’ve already bought a knee caddy and iWalk 2.0.

    Thanks for your help.
