5 days post op
5 days post op and no real problems. I am experiencing a line of numbness across my foot about 1/2 inch from the base of my toes. Has anyone else experienced this? Next appointment is September 5 to remove stitches.

I’m assuming you had a nerve block? I did, and had numbness between my big toe and second toe for _several_ days after the rest of the block wore off. It eventually wore off, but if you’re concerned, call your OS’s office and speak to a nurse or PA. That’s what they’re there for.
Hi Marty, Yup sounds like nerve block or may be postop swelling. Are you in a cast? Make sure your cast is not too tight. You can get sural nerve damage following surgery. It’s a sensory nerve that runs down the back of the leg. But it does not sound like your numbness is in that place. Look up sural nerve distribution on google and it will show you.
I had avulsion of Achilles tendon on Aug 22 while playing tennis and surgery on 28th Aug. Which went well> I have soft cast- posterior splint at this time.
So far I have taken only 1/2 tab of Norco. I usually take anti inflammatory Aleave: Naproxen 660 mg twice a day. Key to pain relief is proactively take anti-inflammatory medication.
As far as moving around the house is concerned I use my computer chair and push it around backwards. That works for me. I will have hard cast on Wednesday.
Marty - hope you are doing well. I had my staples removed last Wednesday. Uneventful, OS said wound healing well but I did have some heel bruising. Thinks it was because initial splint too tight. It will be three weeks post op this Thursday and i will be NWB until 30 days post op, then PWB boot then FWB boot for Appx 4 weeks. Interestingly he has advised I remove the splint nightly to let the leg and wound breathe, do basic ROM (alphabet, gentle toe lifts) until next appt in two weeks. He also said at that time we will start some PT. let us know how your appointment goes on the 5th. Take care and God bless.

You seem as you’re progressing nicely. I like that he has you doing some minor exercises already. I think the more we can do will only help in the end. As long as you don’t overdue. I have been doing the gentle toe lifts since my surgery and feel it has helped. I’ll let you know after my appointment tomorrow. Thanks
Marty
I had surgery 3 1/2 weeks ago to repair a partial torn achilles and to renove a bone spur. I had a nerve block that worked really good, however the top of my foot and toes are still numb after 3 1/2 weeks. I haven’t had much swelling but the numbness is driving me crazy because my foot feels swollen, tight and numb. The anesthesiologist was shocked I was having this experience. He sent me to a neurologist for nerve testing. I have a feeling he knows more that he wants to tell me. I am nervous that there could be nerve damage and my recovery could be a lot longer. has anyone had this experience and what did you do.
I had Achilles surgery on April 23. The nerve block punctured the nerve. I had a numb stripe from my knee to my little toes for about 4 months. It’s now starting to wake up so I have sensations that feel like biting ants on my knee to my ankle along with occasional lightning strike flaming surges. I was told that 1/10,000 have nerve damage from nervous blocks. Guess we are the”lucky ” ones. Peripheral nerve grow back at a rate of a mm/month. So it will probably take about 18 months for the nerve the completely heal.

It’s frustrating to be patient, but feel comforted that it’s not a permanent situation.
One of the purported benefits of real peer-reviewed published studies is that they have to publish real data, rather than waving their hands at claims like 1/10,000 risks. I don’t think there’s any Honest Broker Agency quietly compiling results on 10,000 real-world nerve blocks to deaden lower-leg surgery like ours. I think it’s just something that OSs and anaesthesiologists say. (It’d be great if this site actually had >20,000 post-op post-nerve-block posters here — but no. So you folks are at least 2 out of maybe 100-200 tops?)
Happy to be proved wrong if there’s some actual evidence out there, and not just self-serving puffery.
