Need reassurance!

After my big FWB adventure, my tendon became very sore and swollen at th attachment site.  Yesterday, I took it easy, and the intern at PT said not to worry - it’s still attached.  This am the swelling is making the scar pucker and it’s very sore to the touch…

Did anyone have this sort of tenderness and swelling from initial FWB? Hoping I didn’t mess this up in my enthusiasm!  The main PT wasn’t there and Doc isn’t available. :(

  1. Kim,

I had the same thing a few weeks ago when I went FWB. Elevation and ice multiple times a day should take care of the tendon soreness. The tenderness of the scar is probably from the boot rubbing. I actually rubbed a blister on my scar. Putting on a high sock over the scar should take care of that.

  2. Thanks - I put the sock on and an extra pad behind it as well. Good to know this is normal - I’ve never been such a big chicken in my life!

  3. Kim,
By going FWB, you are applying stress to your tendon and it is reacting to that by swelling and some soreness. This is not only perfectly natural but necessary too. In simplified terms, the stress causes the scar tissue to become stronger. Of course you need to apply the stress in proper proportions and your PT should be able to guide you through it. In this case, Nietzsche’s quote “What does not kill me, makes me stronger.” applies.

  4. I bet Nietzsche never had an AT rupture! ;)

  5. My swelling and pain is down after my FWB adventure 3 days ago - completely back to normal except my range of motion was reduced a bit. Just posting in case someone experiences this in the future - a possibility of big swelling and AT tenderness the evening after first trying FWB - but it’s not an indication of any damage done… Thanks for the reassurance - I’m doing more PWB today before going hog wild on FWB again. :)

  6. Kim-

Glad to hear the pain & swelling down .. pretty impressive though that you’re trying FWB after only 5 weeks, etc .. keep it up .. as others have said, I’m sure the initial pain/swelling is normal .. good luck w the hog wild on FWB :)

  7. Glad you are feeling better, Kim! This can be so scary, and the last thing any of want to do is hurt ourselves again! I’m sure you will be FWB in no time, with less and less pain/swelling each time! Keep up the great work, you are an inspiration!

  8. Still laughing at your Nietzsche comment above, Kim :-) Remember when you were NWB and how tough things were, and now you are walking, and starting to do normal activities again! Awesome progress!
