Flipping the status bar

August 20th, 2013

strikeoutsJust changed my status on the widget to FWB! Those of you baseball fans will get the visual analogy above.

Experimenting with different dance steps: The one-crutch. The cane. The minor assist from a hand on my 8-year-old’s shoulder. It all feels good. It feels great, in fact! If I could, I’d jump for joy.

Kiki did you have trouble coming off crutches? I’m trying to get to one crutch but I just can’t seem to. I’m not sure if it’s my confidence or if I just actually can’t. My leg seems to “give way under me” when I try. I’m still in vacoped.

I said I could walk, but I didn’t say my walk was PRETTY! I take small steps and lump around like Frankenstein’s monster. Seriously, Purple, have you been doing any strengthening exercises for your upper leg/hip area, as well as gentle stretching/strengthening in your calf?

To clarify: I was told to use shoes with a half-wedge around the house, and the boot outside or when feeling the need for protection. With no support whatever, I can take small steps and feel balanced, but I know my gait is far from correct (PT on Friday will help). With the help of a cane or one crutch, touching down on the side of the *good* leg (Purple, maybe try switching sides?), I can take bigger and bigger strides.

I can definitely feel the increased stiffness/soreness after the first two days doing this, but it’s not bad, especially knowing that it’s pain in the service of a Higher Good! Kind of like finally getting to the pushing stage after long hours of labor. (Sorry, guys, mom in-joke–there are lots of us here, I figured I could risk it.)

Yeah good for you! I’m slowly walking without assistance now too and couldn’t be happier!

Thanks Kiki for you comments. I have been doing some hip and thigh strength but only since I started physio last week. I wondered if that might be impacting. I am trying the crutch on my “good” leg. I maybe need to try smaller steps!! I’m not to bothered by the pain.

Good for you though! How exciting to have some freedom! I can’t wait!!!!

Thanks for the update - I am just two weeks post surgery and I am very much enjoying hearing where you are.

I just got boot with huge wedge and I using two crutches touching down with injured foot. Not sure I understand the one crutch? Do you use on good side with injured step?

Eager to have one free hand. Maybe I just need to chill.

Sally, the one crutch goes down on the good side, just before or at the same time as the bad foot also hits the ground (the opposite of PWB with two crutches, where you touch down the boot and the boot-side crutch simultaneously). But the one crutch, or cane (which I prefer, it’s less cumbersome) is mainly for stabilization, not for weight transfer. As I understand it, it’s meant as a short-term measure for that period when you are *able* to put weight on the bad leg, but not very well balanced yet. Two weeks seems awfully soon to me to put that much weight on, but I’m not on the “fast, modern” protocol (as Norm always says), and maybe you are…
