Squash again …………………….. ☺

Cant really believe it but I was on the squash court at 15 weeks. I’ve banned myself from any sort of competition but have been training with the coach. First time on we worked on footwork drills for 15 mins to test the water. For those of you who don’t play that’s basically moving from the centre of the court to all four corners and side walls and playing an imaginary shot then back peddling to the centre ( T )

I was shocked actually that it felt fine, so we moved to drives downs the walls and all sorts of shots. Stopped after 50 mins not because I needed to rather I was felt I didn’t want to push things. My calf was like jelly though as it had a good workout ☺

So I hope this gives some inspiration to those behind me. I have been walking on tip toes around the house as much as possible to strengthen things up. Walking up the stairs on tip toes to really test the water and using a body sculpture machine every morning. Just standing on that on tiptoes for 5 mins and you can hardly walk afterwards.

I was going to call this post ‘Squash and the art of motorcycle maintenance’ because I have far too many vehicles in my life and decided to get all the motorbikes/cars/vans back on the road ready to sell. This involved lots of hands and knees type of maintenance work along with crawling in and out of the pit. The point to all this is that I never gave my AT such a good stretch and work out as doing all this. So much that you forget about it which is the whole point. If we can distract ourselves and get on with something else other than worrying about the AT then it really helps the progress. When I am watching the ball on the squash court I forget about the AT.

Hope this helps those behind me.

  1. Wow..that’s good going Jules..!!
I did mine playing squash 3 weeks ago. I thought I’d be 6 months or more before I played again. I’d be more scared than anything else of doing it again. Also my left unruptured one is feeling very sore and like most things I fear a compensatory injury that I have had before.

I’m at nearly 2 weeks in plaster after the op but over 3 weeks in plaster since doing it..any tips on what exercises I could be doing now ?.

Well done so far though..hope all goes well

    Dave

  2. Hey Dave you’ll be back on court sooner than you think :)

Sounds like you have done the right foot like mine. I had 2.5 months off squash after breaking my shoulder, had been playing 4/5 times a week before the break. Stupidly I went back playing at the pace i was before the break and not only that but 3 days in a row ! Last match was with a drop shotter. Thats all he did. Well I was quick enough to get to them but after 3 games and on the last point my last lunge to the front corner = full ATR.

Ok as for my experience. You will start getting pains and aches in the good (left AT) that you swear are signs you are going to snap that one too. Dont worry but rest it up as much as you can. As for exercises, while you are in the cast I continually wiggled my toes and lightly pressed then up against the top and then down against the bottom of the cast. Also used to wiggle my ankle as if im trying to get my foot out of the cast.

I went FWB at 4 wks still in a cast. Once you start to do that it will feel like you weigh tons, but dont be scared just start to put weight on it and it soon feels fine. Obviously don’t do it if it continues to hurt but expect a bit of a shock when you first apply weight.

I used magnets over my cast, as if its good enough for a race horse its fine for me ( see one of my old posts). Then i used vibrations from my scooter which seemed to help swelling.

Hope this helps and i didnt really explain it too clearly in my post but i was trying to say that it is possible to COMPLETELY forget about your AT. I have. Ok my calf is not yet as big as the other but it will get there and i dont do anything too mad but as for worry it has slipped my mind :)
