My surgery was last Tuesday.

Boy has it been a long week.   It was worse then then surgeon antitipated, they had to remove my tendon from my heel and cut away about 1/2″ from then end of the tendon.  Then they had to release my tendon to lengthen it to reattach to my heel.  They also found a bone spur that they removed.  I really didn’t experience any pain afterward as I stayed on top of the pain meds.  However on Sat I became very dizzy, low grade fever and just not well.  I ended up in the hospital with pneumonia and then found out that I had an infection in my blood.  I just got out of the hospital about an hour ago.  Hopefully now I will be on the road to recovery.  The hard part is that I can’t walk and still need assistance from others.  I do have a question though, how do you take a shower with the bandage on your leg and no weight bearing allowed?  Would love suggests I hate the sponge baths.

  1. sorry to hear about the complications. hang in there.

I take baths w/ bad leg hanging over side of the tub.

  2. JT,

You really have had a week. I hope that you recover well from your most recent setbacks and are ever-stronger. Keep your spirits up and blog as often as you want to get out any ill feelings. More than you can imagine there will be words of encouragement from this community.

Since my first day back home from surgery, I have used a cast bag for my leg and a transfer shower chair. I chose the transfer shower chair over the regular shower chair because two legs rest outside of the tub and two are in against the far tub wall. This allows you to transfer easier in my opinion. I wanted the added security of not actually stepping into the tub; this chair I can simply scoot on and then keep my affected leg on the rim.

I got the cast bag on Amazon and it worked extremely well.

  3. Thanks. I am doing better as far as the lungs are concerned. I am now 1 week and 3 days out from surgery and don’t really have pain unless I put my leg down. When I let my leg hang down it is very painful. It makes it hard to even want to get up. I have a roll-about to use instead of crutches but it is just getting from the couch to the roll-about and then to the bathroom.
How long does it usually take before the pain subsides? anyone else have this problem? I go back to the dr. on Wed to have the stitches or staples not sure what I have removed and then will be in another cast. Not sure how long I will be in the cast but will still not be able to put any weight on foot.
