4weeks ATR conservative heal and need your advice

Posted at 2:48 AM under Uncategorized

Hi All

I am about to get my heel wedge in my moon boot changed tomorrow and once it is settled down I can begin FWB with crutches … I have no idea what to expect? At the moment when I have been PWB and crutchering around which is not lots and lots my foot swells and throbs guessing that is normal…once it is elevated and iced eventually swelling susides…. I know not to expect lots and not much will change just not sure what to expect as I am only seeing the orthotic guy tomorrow not my orthopedic specialist for another 2weeks….so any advice out there?

thanks Jo

Jo - seems like you are on a good fast track. The swelling is normal and may continue for quite some time even after you are in shoes. Make sure you wear a compression sock.

    thanks Xplora

right will head off (send hubby to get a compression sock for me….this site is so awesome and helpful really would be at a loose end without it and be pulling my hair out which i am some days!
Wedge replaced about an hour ago and I just have a real dull ache that is progressively getting worse so have taken light pain relief and will not push it to hard to far today so I am outside on the deck in the sun watch live volleyball on laptop that is only being played 5km down the road!

Many people actually look at this injury as a well earned rest. It forces you to sit down and re-evaluate your life. Some take up new hobbies or get back into old ones. i.e. those you can do from a chair. You can catch up on some reading etc. Very soon you will be able to engage in some light exercise but nothing is stopping you from doing upper body stuff. The ache is your body adjusting. Regular panadol will help. I seem to have said that a lot lately but it really does work if taken as prescribed but the key is to keep taking it every 4 to 6 hours and no more than 8 in a day. Enjoy the volleyball.

    Hi jo
I’m also 4weeks non op, I was in cast for 2 days, then went private medical 3rd day, they put me in aircast boot and told me FWB straight away, the boot had 5wedges and was insrtucted to take a wedge out after 2weeks then 1wedge a week after that, it’s quite daunting to do this without a doc present so not sure if the dull pain and swelling is the norm, so te day to day pains I get, are hot calfs , swelling of the inner ankle, I’ve also had a couple of trips that cause swelling, my fault take too many risk, I’m really regretting not insisting on MRI scan, that way I guess I could at least MRI again to see if I’m back to square one, oh forgot to say I get a lot of weird calf twitching. Hope you have a full speedy recovery. Xplora your right there are some positives with this injury. One being I’m going to now Suss how to do a blog I’ve never had the time to investigate how you do them

hey Ripraproar…blogging is great I’m getting used to it too!!!
re MRI me too regret not having one done either for comparison!….i have just under two weeks to go before i see orthopaedic dr for check up on progress ….FWB on foot has begun and don’t have pain while doing it but man does my ankle and foot ache later on guess that me just getting used to doing it as it hasn’t for the last 4 weeks… I want to do more and more but then am hesitant as what is too much and what is not…frustrating as lack of guidance is not there….so have booked in just to see my gp on Tues. to get the ok to see if i can drive the automatic (cant see why i cant as it not illegal and insurance have said yes I can if dr says ok) and since I can FWB and I don’t even use that leg to drive cant see why there would be an issue but i need the dr clearance first!.

    Hi jo
    Sorry I missed you reply,
I’ve been driving since day 1 of by boot which was 3 days post ATR, not been a problem, I do get frustrated Because some days I feel I’ve done too much and then days I haven’t, can be a bit frustrating, norms helped loads also check brady brown achilles on u tube very inspiring he’s doing non op aggressive .
