2 Shoes, Ministry of Silly Walks

December 13, 2011

Finally got the OK for 2 shoes at 11 weeks post surgery. My recovery path has been conservative; NWB till week 8, was full bearing a few days after that. Start PT later this week and was told by the surgeon to walk without a limp, no mater how slow I go.

And slow am I walking. With time and PT it will get better but right now I feel like I’m in the Ministry of Silly Walks (If you don’t know what it is, check out Monty Python on YouTube). At a pace Tim Conway’s old man character would like.

Personally I don’t think there’s any downside from having one stride longer than the other, as long as you keep your feet parallel, straight ahead (or whatever is your normal healthy walk). Walking with your “bad” toe out to the side and rolling over the inside of your foot is a Very Bad Idea, partly because it’s a hard habit to break, and partly because it gets the rest of your body out of alignment. But one long and one short seems harmless (IMHO) and gets you around faster.

As you heal and strengthen, your short stride naturally lengthens. Most of us get to “full length except for the last push-off” pretty quickly, then wait a while longer to get that push-off at the end of the stride.

Well, I think I am looking forward to the Ministry of Silly Walks. I’m still NWB though so I am looking forward to a lot of things.
