The injury
On February 5th at about 7:15 PM I thought I got kicked or rolled from behind while running defensive dribbling drills. I the initial pain was comparable to when I broke my leg when I was 17 (while playing soccer). I felt this incredible pain my right calf and ankle. My calf felt tight and my first thought was cramp. When I stood up, it felt as if the right side of my body was about 2 inches lower than the left side. This combined with intense pain caused me to immediately drop to my knees. Still unsure of what to think or what was happening, I again tried to “walk it off”, prompting on the 12 year old girls to say “You’re not like your daughter, you can’t just get up and keep going.” This was her way of saying “you’re old, take it easy.” Not liking the pain or the tunnel vision effect I sat for the next 20 minutes, trying to loosen up my calf and periodically testing the ankle.
After the practice, I tried to make my way to my car. This became the single most painful thing I could have done. At this time I’m still thinking its a calf or muscle injury, although the Achille’s tendon thoughts are starting to come. By the time I reached my truck (it was quite a walk to my car) I thought I was going to pass out, the pain was so intense. Called my wife to tell her I was not doing well and be prepared to come get me. Not sure how I did it, but I managed to drive home.
Ice, heat, Advil and my boots only helped mute the pain over the weekend. By this time I knew something was seriously wrong and the Achilles had to be the problem.
