Day 2 on the Blog, Day 4 post-op
Thanks so much for everyone’s comments. I am reading more and more people’s stories, and am amazed how much support there is on this site.
Today is day 4 since being “fixed”- managed to get in the tub today, with my foot up on the edge. I am learning to do things slowly and carefully. The crutches work really well. I am finding that the advice of “keep your foot elevated” is very important. I can tolerate some time with my foot down early in the day, but by late afternoon, even putting my foot down to get to the bathroom and back causes lots of throbbing, and my toes to turn purple. It seems like some people experienced minimal swelling, and others felt more like me. I am also finding that in the evening I have periods of time where my incision line burns and stings. I am hoping that by next week, the swelling and the burning sensation will settle down.
I am wondering if anyone else has a job where they are up on their feet all day? Once I am in a FWB cast, will I be able to walk around easily? I am a nurse in a busy Dr’s office. I work pretty much 7.5 hours straight, 3-4 days per week. Am I crazy to think I can go back to this in 6-8 weeks?
Have a good sleep everyone, even if your leg is elevated on 3 pillows

Jenni.
the answer is yes to the work issue. As a chiropractor I too am on feet 8-9 hours a day. there are several tools that make life with the cast/boot easier to move about. Check out the main page for products you can use..I used a roll about..basically a raised skateboard that you put your knee on with your leg at 90 degrees. Lots of laughs from patients but it did the job. I was NWB and back to work quickly
Hope the days are getting better,
Doc Ross

Jenni - I don’t have a job on my feet, but I would agree with Doc Ross, that if you have a roll about, you should be back to work sooner than 6-8 weeks if you want. Even when you get to FWB, it will not be easy to be on your feet all day, it takes some time to build the stamina back up, so you could still continue to use the roll about.
On the evening swelling/burning/stinging…I felt similar. I was actually concerned and had bad dreams about the wound being infected and gnarly. It’s funny how our mind can play tricks on us, as when I got out of the splint and into the cast, the wound looked fantastic. Since I couldn’t see it those first 12 days though, I let my mind wander with the pain/burning. Hope your first week is going well..sounds like you are managing. My first bath was at 4 days too…I can remember being thoroughly exhausted after the effort, like I had just run a marathon…but it was a good feeling to be clean! Hang in there!
