Surgery Day

Published by jaybird17 under Surgery

Surgery for my ruptured achilles tendon was scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on April 27 so we arrived at the hospital around 8:30 a.m. The hospital staff and my wife were great at keeping me relaxed and comfortable. I got a nerve block and some feel good anesthesia so the last thing I remembered was lying on my stomach and shutting my eyes. When I awoke I was being wheeled back to my room with my brand new cast. My whole leg was numb and I could not move my toes. It was a strange feeling having your brain send a signal and then not being able to do it.

I got back home around 12:45 p.m. and immediately elevated my leg. I had a little lunch and just relaxed. I kept having to go to the bathroom and couldn’t figure out why because I only had a sip of water and a diet coke after surgery. Then I realized I had an IV so that ended that mystery. The rest of the day was very relaxing thanks to my wife who has been a saint. I am supposed to try out a “roll-a-bout” tomorrow and am hopeful it will be better than the crutches. My surgeon is kind of a character and he sent my wife before and after pictures of my ankle while I was on the operating table. I’m no doctor but it was clear from the pictures that I needed some surgery.  My surgeon also performed ATR surgery on Mike Brown of the Bears (one of my favorite all time players) so I decided to wear my M. Brown jersey to the hospital for moral support.

The highlight of my day was reading three stories to my 2 ½ year old daughter when she got back from her Grandparents house. She made me a little card and her smile made me feel like everything was going to be just fine.

LESSON LEARNED: Take your pain pills BEFORE the pain starts.
