Am I Paranoid? (Day 32 / May 29)

Published by jaybird17 under Week 5 (May 26-June 1)

Help….

Got walking cast off on Monday and into boot.  Did non-rigorous physical therapy on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday (some stretching exercises and 10 mins on a stationary bike).  Stumbled for a second on Thursday night on my carpet at home and felt a quick, sharp twinge about half way up my calf.  It was quick and did not last.  It did not feel like my original rupture.  Beginning Saturday I have been having some aches and pains and dont feel like I can do some of my range of motion exercises like I was during the week.  Did some icing which helped but my ankle is definitely not swollen.

My big concern is doing the one range of motion exercise where you lay your foot straight out in front of you and lift the top of your foot so you can feel your achilles tendon stretch.  Monday- Friday I could feel it stretch but now I dont feel it as much.  Have I just loosened it up by doing exercises all week or did I do some damage to it when I stumbled on Thursday?  Would I know if I re-ruptured it?  Are these aches and pains just from doing PT 3 times in 4 days?

Any advice/input would help.

Thanks everyone….

Cast Away (Day 28 / May 25)

Published by jaybird17 under Week 4 (May 19-25)

I had my second post-op visit with the surgeon Monday, May 23.  They removed the walking cast and inspected the incision and said everything was good to go.  I was put back in the walking boot and told I could put full weight on it.  I am now down to one crutch/boot for long distances and just the boot for moving around my house and at work.  The only restriction I have is that I cannot do full weight on it without the boot.

Welcome back long last foot…..

They gave me info for physical therapy and of course I immediately made an appointment for the same day.  I will be going 3x a week for 4 weeks and then 2x a week for another 3 months.  I’m sure it will get tougher but so far so good.  They gave me some exercises to do at home to increase the range of motion and get the blood flowing.  The highlight was that I actually got to ride a stationery bike today for 10 minutes.  Even though there was no resistance on it, it was great.

LESSON LEARNED - You will definitely feel reluctant to move your foot at all with the boot off but once you get over it mentally, it is no big deal….you will be surprised at how much you can move it.  Also, make sure to start working your other leg to build it back up, my therapist said that he has seen cases where people push too much during therapy and wind up snapping the good leg’s achilles.

Really???? (Day 12 / May 9)

Published by jaybird17 under Week 2 (May 5-11)

So I went for my first post-op visit and was pleasently surprised.  They took out the stitches and it was really nice to see my foot again.  There was no swelling or bruising and they said the wound looked great.  They took off the old cast and put on a new one that is much smaller and more comfortable.  They also gave me a shoe to go over it (see below).

Then came the good part….my Doctor said that I should use a right crutch for a few days but I was cleared to put “full weight” on my ankle!!!  I asked him 4 times if he was sure and he said yes, that the cast would protect me.  Obviously he wants me to take it slow but it was great news.  I haven’t yet tried putting “full weight” on it because I am a little nervous but I will give it a go with the crutches tonight.

In two weeks I go back to get this cast removed and into the walking boot so I can start physical therapy.  After a month I should be ready to go back to 2 shoes.

LESSON LEARNED:  Don’t lose your spirit…there is light at the end of the tunnel and it is not a train!!!!

Back to Work (Day 5 / May 2)

Published by jaybird17 under Week 1 (April 28-May 4)

Went back to work today and things went pretty well.  Make sure to re-arrange your office so you can elevate your foot.  Fortunately I will be able to work from home a couple days each week.  I am going to take off all Fridays in May so that puts me in the office two days a week.

LESSON LEARNED - Don’t force it but getting back to work makes you feel a bit more normal so try it when you are ready.
