5 Weeks Post Op (but who’s counting)
Hi Fellow ATR’s….
I got to see the doc on Friday and get the cast off. That was a great sensation to just feel fresh air on the skin. It was even better to take a shower without the cast. He was happy with the way it’s healing and the overall progress. The instructions were to see him in another month. For the next two weeks, start PWB, and then for the last two weeks, ditch the crutches and start FWB. I was so excited when I got home, I immediately wanted to start PWB and tried to walk around the apartment. It was a bit rough, but excited to finally start some progress in the recovery.
I wasn’t able to put much weight on it, maybe 95% still on the crutches. Since then, I’ve been working on it, but putting weight on it causes pain on the heel. According to most of the posts, that’s pretty common. I’ve started standing near a railing that I hold on to and shift weight from foot to foot. So far, so good. I’m able to put more weight on it than I thought. At the rate I’m going, I think I might make FWB before expected, but am nervous to push it.
The doc also said at the next visit, which would be be 2 months Post Op, that I could probably ditch the boot and start PT.
Thank you to everyone on this site. It’s comforting to read the different journeys and everyone’s successes.
Happy Healing…

Awesome news iswmbkrn, congrats! Keep at it with the progress to FWB. You will probably find that you are able to do short stints of FWB around the house, etc without any pain or tiredness. Longer stints are where it gets tricky because you can feel great and then suddenly get tired and uncomfortable, so it’s a good idea to take a crutch or two along if you’re going to be on your boot for a while so that you can revert to PWB if it gets tired. A couple of times I reverted all the way back to NWB during excursions because my leg had had enough. All good - incremental progress is the key.
Exciting stuff iswmbkrn!
I am 7 weeks this coming Friday and I have my second assessment with ortho on Thursday. I hope that my news is as good as yours. I have been PWB (~30lbs pressure) since 2 weeks post op but progressively putting more weight on. Its odd….but my bad leg feels almost relieved when I put weight on! This is not to say it gets sore after a day at work. I think I am most excited about ditching the crutches!!
Here’s to FWB!
Good Luck tomorrow, Kevin. I’m sure the news will be great and hopefully the doc will let you ditch the Crutches. Keep us posted…!!
Kevin, I can’t wait to hear how it went for you. I know how wonderful it is to be FWB, without the crutches!:-)
my leg and foot might complain after a hard day’s walk, like today’s, but I’m keeping up my efforts, as I know you will too!
