Week 25 & 26 – A gentle reminder

1 12 2008

Sorry for the late post (I missed the 26th week by one day), but life seems to get in the way of blogging.

Since the last posting, I’ve been staying fairly steady with my run speed 6:27-6:15/km pace and my left side has felt more normal than ever. Over the last week I had slowly jacked up the speed to as much as 5:45/km for an extended period of time.

However, on November 28th, I was humming along on a run just before my physio appointment and then suddenly for a brief second or two, I felt like I had no muscles on my left side. I was spooked big time. It reminded me of those first few moments after the ATR, so I immediately slowed the treadmill down and walked the rest of the time. Everything was fine, but I think my body sent me a gentle reminder that I am not 100% yet, and I should still be careful. So I’ll take it easy on the speed.

I still have a hump at my bottom scar. I would post pictures but it still looks like the last set of pics of my leg. Physio still consists of the hydro bath, ultrasound, laser and deep massage of the hump and surrounding areas. I have also added a general massage once every two weeks.

All is good. I hope all is well for all of you out there too. If you care about this sort of thing, I’ve have posted all my Run/Walk workouts. This doesn’t include my biking and swimming.

Thanks for reading.

Hoss,

Great to see you’re back running! I’ll hit the six month mark soon and have been slowly upping the speed on the treadmill - not at your pace (hey, I wasn’t the fastest runner pre-rupture!) but getting there without pain. Still at PT twice weekly and seeing improvement every week.

Regards,

Never mind my pace, congrats to you on your progress. The fact that we are where we are is awesome. I agree with you blog post that you most also remember to stretch the non ruptured side. Sometimes I get lazy and forget but I definitely dont want anything happening on that side too.
All the best to you.

hoss,

i wanna let you know that what you felt there in the treadmill happened to me at work where i tried to lift this heavy patient from the bed sitting to help him stand up and get in a chair . I think i used the calf muscle too much that it had no more strength to offer and it just like gave way and thats how t felt after my ATR when i was walkng .
my progress is slowing down a bit as im working too much to do any exercises and stuff.

Maybe work will be your form of rehab that is what it was for me in Sept. and Oct. Good luck.

Hoss,
I am in week 3 after my ATR resulting from playing squash. I have just had the fiberglass cast put on and began reading your blogg which has been very informative and helpful. I live in The Netherlands and don’t speak the native langauge so your blogg has provided me with all the answers that I would have wanted to know. Thanks for spending so much time making your experience available for all the people that suddenly find themselves in this situation. I wish you great success.

Glad to know I could be of some help. Squash is tough. I stopped playing it to be nice to my Achilles, oh well, you can see where that got me. Heal quick and all the best in 2009.

Hoss thanks a lot for sharing your experience with all of us that are in the same situation. I had rupture of both Achilles tendons, and had
a second surgery on the one that broke in the first place.
My right leg carries 5 months after surgery, the left two months from the second one.
I´m really depressed and waiting the second cast to be removed after two months of having it.
Anhow, patience is the only thing you must work on and let the time pass as you say in some of your letters.
Thanks again

Norberto,
That is crazy. I can’t imagine what you are going through.
After going through this whole ordeal and knowing how easy it can happen, I sometimes wonder about re-rupture or the other side rupturing.
Patience is definitely the key thing at all stages of recovery. Now that I am running regularly and back to a “normal” training schedule, I am very careful about increases in speed or distance. I am definitely not pushing the intensity.
All the best in your recovery.
Hoss
