Week 17 - I’m stronger but I crashed

28 09 2008

All is coming along as good as could be. My left leg is getting stronger and if things keep progressing like they are, I may have to move the date of my first run up by a month or two. I had my mind set on January but it looks like it will be earlier. I won’t push it though. I’ll just let it happen organically.

I rode my mountain bike home from work all week (25-30 minute trip) and all went perfect until Friday. At one stretch of my route where I have to ride on the sidewalk, I moved over on the grass to give a pedestrian a wide berth. Upon return to the sidewalk, the tire got caught on a deep groove between the cement and the grass and down I went. Immediately I checked out my left side to make sure everything was ok with the Achilles and it was fine. It was stinging a bit but felt normal after a few minutes back on the bike. As far as everything else, other than a bit of road rash on my forearm and elbow, and some embarrassment, I felt great and just continued home.

Today, I did 45 minutes on the eliptical machine and my left leg (below the knee) did feel a bit tingly for 20 minutes afterwards. But that may be due to the new shoes I was trying out since it feels fairly normal now.

RIP Paul Newman.

Til next time, thanks for reading.

I’m glad your biking accident didn’t do any harm….get right back on that horse, Hoss LOL….It must feel good to be getting back in your pre-ATR shape. I hope your goals continue to come true for you.
Congrats,
Marianne

Hi Hoss,

I just read your entire blog. :) WOW!! It is impressive and so helpful. You are motivating me! Today I did much work around the house and I feel “burning” of my tendon and a little swelling (I am week 6 on Tuesday). My Pt says heat before and Ice after with elevation, and massage, so i try to keep up with this. It felt so good for me to help my family again!! I never thought getting up to do laundry would be such a pleasure. Sorry to hear about the bike ride but good thing you are fine. Your consistent blog was so helpful as I could go back to your 6th week and read…..so thanks again for sharing the details.

p.s. For those having surgery this week, you may have to take a baby aspirin each day while your immobile (just in case you haven’t thought about that).

Marilynrd,
Thanks for your comments. I am glad my comments are of some use. When I look back at my first 8-10 weeks I made use of many blogs to get me through and that is what this is all about. This site sure has been a Godsend. Don’t you love how much you appreciate the little things now? Are you sure you want to get back to helping the family so early? Milk it for a while. I am still getting my wife to mow the lawn. :) Heal well.

Marianne,
Great to hear from you. It is great to get back to regular activity but I gotta start trimming some weight. I hope all is well with you too.
