Week 4 Post-op — Day 1
23 06 2008Lots of movement at work today on the crutches so my right leg got a huge workout. It thought it might explode. It felt like I did one million leg squats. I think that when this is all over my right leg is going to dwarf my left.
Currently, I’m feeling a little tingly at my surgery site. Elevating makes it go away so I hope I didn’t push things too much today but I could not avoid it.
Weighed myself today and I’m 174 lbs. This is same weight I was at the time of the ATR. Since the surgery, my appetite reduced by 2/3. As a result, my weight dropped to 172 lbs. My appetite seems to be making a bit of a comeback recently but I’ve also visited 2 buffets within the last 4 days. Hopefully the weight stays off.
Oh yeah, a tip for those of you in casts. Make sure to keep up on the hygiene and clean your toes that are sticking out of the cast. Things can get quite crusty and gross if you don’t stay on top of things. Especially the baby toe area that tends to get hidden in the cast and gather moisture.
Til next time.
Huggies Natural Care wipes are one of my new favorite things. That’s what i used on my toes. (i’m in boot now, still use them) They don’t have any alcohol in them so they don’t dry your skin out, more than it is. Great for a quick sponge bath too. My other new favorite thing? Becks LIght beer. Only 64 calories. I can burn a couple of those off crutching my @ss to the bathroom and back! LOL

I’m with you with the baby wipes. I had my wife buy them during my first week of this whole adventure. I use them for everything.
The beer sounds inviting but I’ve returned to my single malt scotch as a great way to close out my night. As the weather gets hotter in my area though I must admit that the beer craving is creeping in more than ever.
Hey Hoss, just read your blog. I ruptured my achilles, right foot on June 8th and had surgery on the 13th. Now 11 days post-op. I am also a high school teacher (science) but am on maternity leave. I had to come to terms with the fact that I cannot take care of the baby right now and have my parents and in-laws taking turns. Did you end up taking time off? I would have asked for a full six weeks minimum. Teachers have lots of sick days and if there is one thing I learned teaching the last seven years its that they don’t really care if it is you or not in the classroom so take care of yourself first. You will end up paying later if you don’t. Your doctor seems to be taking the same approach as mine. I am in Northern Ontario, where are you?
Going through all of this while on mat leave has to suck even more. Wow!
I’m just north of TO. No time off for me other than the 2 days I took after surgery. I needed more but what can you do when your doc won’t say I must be off.
With the end of the year so close I decided to tough it out.
The higher ups didn’t care if I took the rest of the year off actually, they just wanted to know one way or the other so they could make plans for a replacement. The other teacher on staff that ruptured their achilles 2 weeks earlier than me still has not returned. If this happened in the middle of the school year I would have sought a docs note more aggressively or at least got a motorized wheechair to get around at school.
Get better.
