Week 8: Knee-high black boots are all the rage

Four weeks have passed since I stood on my own two feet, and in two days at my next ortho-doctor appointment hopefully I’ll remove this great galumphing black moonboot once and for all! I’ve heard lots of stories of broken feet, legs and tendons whenever people see me in my moonboot. It’s a great conversation starter…

Small wins, as my confidence grows:

  • Walking!
  • Walking while carrying items in both hands!
  • Removing the boot when at home - But walking very carefully, to prevent overstretching the tendon. I say I have the gait of a teddy bear. My husband says “a pirate with a peg leg”.
  • Taking the little stool out and standing in the shower
  • Removing the boot in bed - I only started doing this last week for fear of twitching my toes at night, which didn’t happen and it is so nice to wake up without a backache.
  • New skill: putting pants on without sitting down!

Although I was given no tendon exercises except for flexing it in the limits of the boot, I exercise every day on my new “stationery bike” (I acquired a “fluid trainer”) and may end up more fit than when I started…

  • Thanks for sharing your experience. I had surgery two weeks ago and it gives me a sense of hope to read about people’s progress. Happy healing :)

  • Sounds like you are doing great! I agree, the giant black boot is a conversation starter. I rarely go a day without some one, some where telling me about their fracture, rupture or what not. Enjoy your new found independence, hoppy!

  • Lucky you - no more boot! I’m just a little behind you in my recovery and am looking forward to the milestones you listed. Sleeping without the boot, showering without a garbage bag….. I can hardly wait.

    Enjoy!

  • Awesome news - standing in the shower would be a dream come true as would putting on pants without sitting down. It’s amazing how “little” things are such huge victories. Keep up the good work

  • PANTS?! Now that is exciting! I too was hoping to try standing in the shower and very excited about that as the water pressure is so much better up there. Oh the little things. :)

  • Wait till you can carry not one, but TWO cups of tea carefully upstairs on a Sunday morning, and your previously devoted husband who has waited on you hand and foot when you were first injured…… snoozes on and lets his go cold!! Oh the little things indeed! He said it tasted just as good cold and drank every last drop.
So many things to look forward to :-)

  • I stood in the shower!! AHHHHH! I did not get rid of the stool as I have to bump my way to the stool then pull myself up. No wiggling around - but still - I stood.

  • Yahoo - progress! It will just keep on getting better.
