30 April 2013: Discharge

Jump to Comments

I woke at 2:30am. YEEEOOOWWCHH!! Leg anaesthetic wore off. I buzzed the nurse… Panadol didn’t offer any relief but Tramadol did. Phew! I also found that there is a lot of mysterious beeping in Hospital.

My husband and mum arrived just before breakfast, which I happily consumed (except for the curious yellow, green and pink Egg Benedict). A physio gave me exercises (basically, squeeze thighs, buttocks and hips and take deep breaths) and crutch lessons, and a pharmacist gave me three levels of relief tablets and a box of anticoagulant needles for the next 19 days.

The surgeon stopped by to say it went well and will see me in two weeks, during which my leg must remain booted and Elevated. By lunchtime I was home. A week to recover at home, then I will attempt to return to work - luckily for my tendon, I have a desk job!

Leg was just a little painful this morning, took 2 Panamax tablets at breakfast and lunch, seems ok now.

    I’m guessing those drugs are mostly new-fangled narcotics? The fact that you’ve got a boot is good news for your rehab. Nice you got the LMW Heparin shots to lower the risk of post-op DVT. It’s effective but expensive, so most don’t get it. Sometimes painful, too, though I didn’t mind ‘em much after my open-heart surgery.

  • Congratulations Hoppy,
    Eggs benedict? You have been spoilt! Looking forward to your recovery blogs.

  • Glad your surgery went well Hoppy.

    BTW

    Tramadol = Ultram
    Panamax = I don’t know :)

    The Tramadol was very effective for me also. It was given to me post-op and pre-op. And it doesn’t have the same (as) addictive properties/withdrawal problems of other opiates, although it supposedly can be habit forming. MY doc had me do the Anti-Clotting injections for 30 days instead of 19 to. My belly looked like a bruise peach!

  • Hi…..follow your orders, listen to your body / leg / ankle….read what posts you want, and RICE alot! Rest Rest Rest
    Ice Ice Ice
    Compression (which I didn’t do actually, those socks killed me)
    Elevate Elevate Elevate
    and then Elevate
    Its been 10 and a half weeks since my ATR surgery and 24 sessions of Physical Therapy, and today was my last session. Kinda scary, kinda joyful, kinda unbelievable that I’m on my own now. No more PT, no more Doctor visits….just have to always be mindful to stretch, watch where I’m walking, only do what I feel I can do. Still on recovery road, but I think I recovered so well, because I did everything I was told to do. Wearing the boot to bed truly was the most annoying part of it all for me. The sound of those frickin’ velcro straps bout sent me over the edge many days/nights. Today…..I put the ol’ boot back in its original plastic bag, with the foam pads, and put it in the storage shed, on top of the (lifesaver) knee walker (which I truly only used for two weeks). We live in a Senior 55+ retirement park and surely these items we’re storing could be used in the future unfortunatley…by anyone of us.
    Happy Healing everyone. I’m staying on this ATR blog cuz I’m addicted to it! Your stories and tips and friendships have helped me deal with so much on this journey. Thank you…… now go Elevate y’all.

  • Good one Sandizona, yes the Achilles Blogs are very “Elevating” :o)
