Question for skiers - when can I get back on the slopes???

Hello skiers out there,

I’m thinking ahead to December, as I would love to go skiing somewhere this winter. But the question is, would my achilles be up to it?

By that stage I would be at the 9.5-10 month mark post-op. If you’ve gone back to skiing after an achilles rupture, I’d be very keen to hear of when you first made the return to the slopes, and how your achilles handled it.

Cheers!

  1. I has surgery in mid-April of 2014 and was skiing in October. Took it easy the first day or two, but it really did not hold me back. Because my newly healed Achilles was a bit “lumpy”, it took a bit of work on my ski boot for it to fit correctly without pain.

  2. Ciao HKexpat, guess you’d be good to go!!
Had surgery in October and the surgeon gave me green light to ski in march but decided to be cautious and not jeopardize everything. Also, it was the end of the season and snow wasn’t great.

  3. Thanks for your stories guys. If there are any other experiences people would like to share, I’d like to hear.

I’m thinking of pushing it to later on in the season now anyway - better snow!

  4. Hey HongKong - I’ll be skiing sometime in the next 2-4 weeks for sure out her in Colorado (at 8.5 months now) so will be sure to let you know on my blog. I’m more worried about how my boots will fit than anything! Where do you ski out there? I spent some time in Japan so have enjoyed skiing in both Hokkaido and Nagano, and would highly recommend it if you haven’t been. We ran into some Hong Kong visitors when we were there.

  5. Skelonas, enjoy your ski trip and please let me know how it goes. Be keen to hear if you can ski as aggressively as you did pre-rupture.

I’ve yet to ski in Asia actually but I was planning to go to Japan - Hokkaido or Nagano. Some friends have also skied in South Korea and Pakistan!
