Spot the differenceHmmmmmThis years must have little black number

Well went for second cast change yesterday after 5 weeks ( 1 week earlier than normal due to imminent holiday in Egypt) & was given the boot! It’s a Donjoy but the bad news is you cannot swim in it like the Vacoped, so will have to sit in the water without any bracing & just be careful. The boot is black with velcro straps & has a hefty soleplate so will be ideal in just over 100F on holiday!! Suppose I should just be grateful to have progressed onto the next stage but feel a bit resentful I won’t be able to swim properly.

The first night without any protection on the achilles was a bit nerve wracking with moderate pain getting into bed & worry that I may just ‘pop’ the AT again by moving overnight, so sleep was at a premium.

Against all odds I survived the night & managed to shower the leg for the first time since ATR - to discover my skin was shedding like a snake when I started to towel dry, so I decided to then have a bath & almost blocked the plughole with dead skin (how gross is that). I felt sooooo much cleaner after a good scrub though.

Muscle¬†atrophy is quite severe & I cannot bring myself to take measurements but see photo. Foot is still quite swolen & I hope this will subside quickly now I can ‘air’ the leg when not mobile.

Well, until the next time, take it easy out there folks.

Hi Chris,
Yes, the dead skin thing is quite gross but so great to get it all off.
Are you allowed to do a bit of massage on the foot? That always helps the bits of swelling I get ’round the ankle. And elevation of course - always good in the morning after a night on the pillows!
Hope you have a great holiday regardless!
PS. Where are the sparkles?

Know the feeling - I used to have quite delicate ankles - now they definitely do not match!
At least you can sleep wiht the boot off - I had to keep mine on in bed - which meant my husband would often have to give it a good wash before I went to be if I had been outside.
Have a great holiday :)

Wow, that’s one overstuffed sausage of a foot! Get yourself a compression sock and you’ll be way more comfortable.
Like you I was really scared the first night I got to sleep without the boot (13 days post-op), but doesn’t it feel so much better!!
Don’t worry too much about swimming without the boot. So long as you don’t kick anything, push off the foot or do anything that causes pain, you should be fine paddling around and even snorkelling (no fin on the injured leg of course - I was doing all this from 2 weeks post op).
Have a great holiday

Hi there,
I KNOW what you are talking about. Just had my cast off and aside form the obvious atrophy, there was the skin scaling thing. But is is soooo great to have the cast off and being able to shower, swim and drive again. I called my ortho guy about the swelling which he stated was normal after being up on the leg.
